An off-duty police officer has been charged with mid-range drink driving at more than twice the legal limit following a six-car crash in Sydney’s south yesterday.
Just after 7.15pm on Sunday, emergency services were called to the Princes Highway in Blakehurst near Beach Street after reports of a multi-vehicle crash.
Police will allege a BMW sedan and a Mitsubishi Outlander both travelling south collided, before hitting four other vehicles – a black Nissan, Volkswagen van, Suzuki SX4 and Skoda station wagon – in the northbound lanes.
The Mitsubishi driver – a 38-year-old man – and his passengers – a 32-year-old woman and an 18-month-old girl – were taken to St George Hospital for treatment for minor injuries.
A passenger in the Nissan – a 32-year-old woman – was also taken to hospital for assessment with an elbow injury.
The occupants of the other vehicles were not injured.
Officers from St George Police Area Command attended and commenced an investigation.
The BMW driver, a 21-year-old man, was subjected to a breath test at the scene which allegedly returned a positive result.
The man, who is a constable attached to Central Metropolitan Region, was arrested and taken to Sutherland Police Station where a subsequent breath analysis returned an alleged reading of 0.126.
He was issued a court attendance notice for mid-range drink driving and will face Sutherland Local Court on October 1.
His licence has been suspended and the officer’s duty status is now under review.
