Flood risk on Sydney road during heavy rain

As thunderstorms approach Sydney’s east coast this weekend the State Emergency Service has warned drivers in the city’s south – “don’t drown, turn around”.
“Thunderstorms have caused heavy rain in some areas of Sydney,” the SES said on Facebook.
“One of the SES volunteers has taken this photo to show how quickly the water can rise at Bexley Rd.
“This is a known flood risk area where vehicles can easily get caught and flood water and cover the road.”
The notorious section of Bexley Rd by Bexley North station is prone to flooding in heavy rains, forcing drivers onto the M5 Motorway at the entrance just north of the site.
The volunteer posted two photos taken 52 minutes apart on Thursday to show the water at low levels rising to just under the overpass during the thunderstorm.
Audley Weir in the Royal National Park has also been closed due to flooding several times in the past fortnight as much-needed heavy rain lashes the state.
The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast a 95 per cent chance of showers and storms on Saturday and Sunday, with maximum temperatures of 27 on Saturday and 19 on Sunday.
On October 17 the SES Sydney Southern Region volunteers responded to more than 60 calls for assistance during the downpour.
