David Reid charged with Graham and Diana Reid’s murders
An elderly husband and wife have been remembered as “beautiful, gentle people” as their 46-year-old son faced court charged with their murders today. David Reid, 46, still had a bandaged arm after a week in hospital following his arrest.
A man accused of murdering his elderly parents inside the home they shared in Sydney’s south has faced court with a bandaged arm after emerging from a week in hospital.
David Reid, 46, did not apply for bail at Sutherland Local Court on Monday after he was charged with murdering his parents Graham and Diana Reid at their home on Tudar Rd in Sutherland on August 6.
Magistrate Les Mabbutt ordered a brief and Reid will return to court on October 14.
Reid faced court via the audiovisual link with a bandaged arm after spending almost a week in police custody at Prince of Wales Hospital in Randwick following his parents’ death.
The IT worker was injured and required antibiotics when police allege he murdered his parents, reportedly by stabbing them and leaving them with horrific injuries.
Police found Mr and Mrs Reid dead when they responded to a phone call from Reid threatening self-harm around 8am that day.
Sutherland Shire Police Area Commander Jason Box said at the time officers were shocked by the scene which confronted them when they arrived at the home in a sleepy suburban street.
“(David Reid) has made certain comments to police at the scene at the time and since then as well,” Commander Box said.
“Police weren’t expecting that when they walked in, and that has been very confronting.”
The congregation at Jannali Anglican Church, where Mr and Mrs Reid had attended and served for more than 50 years, prayed for their late friends at their regular services on Sunday.
A memorial service for the beloved husband and wife, who were described as “beautiful, gentle people”, is expected in the coming week.
In an updated statement on the church’s website, senior minister Reverend Neil Fitzpatrick said the church family was “deeply shocked” by Mr and Mrs Reid’s tragic deaths.
“Graham and Diana, and their son Andrew, have been much loved members of our church for decades,” Reverend Fitzpatrick wrote.
“While we are comforted that they are now at home with Jesus, the grief of their loss will last a long time in the hearts of all who knew and loved them.”
