A man sat freezing in his undies and handcuffs after police conducting a welfare call found his parents dead in horrifying scenes at their home in a sleepy suburban street in Sydney’s south.

David Reid’s parents Graham and Diana Reid tragically died in the golden years of their retirement, leaving their family, friends and church community heartbroken.

Officers had responded to David’s call threatening self-harm at 8.30am when they found the pair dead, reportedly with horrific injuries, in the bedroom and lounge room.

Diana and Graham had been at Jannali Anglican Church for more than 50 years and senior minister Neil Fitzpatrick said their deaths were an “overwhelming tragedy”.

“It was totally out of the blue, there was no warning,” Reverend Fitzpatrick said.

“We are doing what we can to care for the family - they are devastated.”

David was treated at Sutherland Hospital for non-threatening injuries and Sutherland Shire Police Area Commander Jason Box said he would be interviewed when he was discharged.

“(David Reid) has made certain comments to police at the scene at the time and since then as well,” Commander Box said.

“Police weren’t expecting that when they walked in, and that has been very confronting.”

Diana and Graham’s younger son Andrew, 45, also spoke to police for several hours after the shocking tragedy.

Reverend Fitzpatrick said the church was doing their best to care for Andrew and his family, who also attend the church.

“Diana and Graham were lovely Christian people of deep faith, and they are with their Lord Jesus, who they trusted deeply,” Rev Fitzpatrick said.

“Their faith in Jesus really shaped the way that they served others - they gave their lives to others.”

Diana and Graham’s neighbours of 50 years Brian and Lyn were also deeply shaken by the shocking tragedy.

“It’s terrible, I’m not with it at the moment,” Lyn said.

“David was sitting outside in nothing but his undies.”

“He was just in his scungies for probably an hour, an hour and a half - he was handcuffed when they put him in the ambulance,” Brian added.

Lyn said David had also previously attended the church.

“I don’t think he ever had a girlfriend or anything, he kept to himself,” Lyn said.

Reverend Fitzpatrick said the community was completely devastated by Diana and Graham’s deaths.

“They were gracious, gentle people, and they were deeply loved by everyone in our church,” Reverend Fitzpatrick said.

“We thank God for their lives.”
