Coronavirus in the Sutherland Shire and St George

God’s country has unfortunately become a coronavirus hotspot as the Sutherland Shire takes the title for fifth-highest rate of infection across the entire state. Meanwhile, just one suburb in Sydney’s south remains completely corona-free.

Coronavirus has hammered the Sutherland Shire, which now claims the dubious title of the fifth-highest rate of coronavirus infection anywhere across NSW.

With 115 cases the Shire is only outdone by Waverley, Sydney, the Northern Beaches and Central Coast in terms of infection rates.

Cronulla and the 2230 postcode still have the highest number of cases anywhere in Sydney’s south with 24 recorded.

However, 2230 has not had any new cases since March 31, marking a welcome slowdown since the initial boom.

Menai, Illawong, Barden Ridge, Alfords Point and Bangor have recorded 20 cases between them, with no new cases since April 7.

Kirrawee, Grays Point, Kareela, Sutherland and Loftus have enjoyed one corona-free week since their last case on April 14, which brought the total number to 17.

Kurnell is the best performing suburb in the Shire with just one case caught on March 17, followed by Jannali and Como with two cases on March 19.

Georges River is faring the best of any southern Sydney council area, with 60 cases in total and one solitary suburb recording absolutely no cases at all since the coronavirus pandemic broke out.

Penshurst has no confirmed cases of coronavirus, while nearby Oatley and Mortdale have recorded only three in total and none since April 2.

Lugarno, Peakhurst and Riverwood have the highest number of cases in Georges River with 20, though they have had no new cases in almost two weeks.

Allawah and Carlton have recorded 13 cases in total, with just four corona-free days on record since their last confirmed infection.

In Bayside, 48 of their 65 cases are in St George, or the former Rockdale side of the local government area.

Brighton Le Sands, Rockdale, Kyeemagh and Banksia have recorded the highest number of cases with 13, though there have been no new cases since April 2.

Sans Souci and Dolls Point have performed the best, with only seven cases and none since April 5.

Sydney’s south has also recorded just one significant coronavirus cluster, with up to 30 people at a Wolli Creek workplace up until April 2 infected with the virus.

There are now 2963 cases confirmed across NSW and 30 deaths in total.

The worst affected demographic is still women in their 20s, who make up 353 of the cases, while the least affected group is girls aged 0 to 9 with just 14 cases across the state, followed by men aged 90 to 100 with 15 cases.
