Beverley Park suburb sign misspelt in council bungle

Can you see what’s wrong with this sign? This Sydney suburb has borne its name since the dawn of the 20th century – but it has been bungled on a new suburb sign from the local council.

The small southern Sydney suburb of Beverley Park has borne its name since the dawn of the 20th century – but it has been bungled on a new suburb sign from the local council.

The sign reads “Beverly Park” – instead of “Beverley Park”.

A Georges River Council spokeswoman said: “Our contractor has been informed and will be rectifying it over the coming days.”

Kogarah Library archivist Alison Grellis wrote online the suburb was named by a local resident in a competition in 1906.

“Kogarah Municipal Council decided to offer a £10 prize for the most suitable name,” Ms Grellis wrote.

Aldermen argued between Glenroy and Bareena, before a different shortlist was presented at a subsequent meeting.

“From it, the name Beverley Park was chosen,” Ms Grellis wrote.

“Estelle Tucker of Kogarah submitted the name, but why she chose Beverley Park remains a mystery.”

The historic suburb between Kogarah Bay and Ramsgate is home to 2479 people, according to recent Census figures.
