GOT a sweet tooth? Sydney’s Sutherland Shire and St George regions have you covered.
The St George Shire Standard has rounded up the best brownies, waffles, pancakes, chocolates, milkshakes, donuts and gelato from Waterfall to Wolli Creek, from weird and wacky takes to tried, true and traditional. Where will you be this weekend?
Bay Vista, Brighton Le Sands
Brighton’s premier dessert cafe is a Sydney icon. You could try an adults-only milkshake, or go for their waffles or pancakes smothered in Belgian chocolate, blueberries and ricotta, or strawberry and banana with maple syrup, butterscotch, Nutella or caramel. With so many options, one trip will not be enough.
San Churros, Miranda
Everyone knows there is no better place for dessert either before or after a movie at Event Cinemas next door than San Churros. Go for their classic Spanish-style cinnamon churros with your choice of chocolate, or for something truly unusual try their exclusive new ruby chocolate experience. Ruby is the first new true chocolate discovery in more than 80 years, offering a naturally fruity and deliciously velvet taste.
Frangipani, Cronulla
Frangipani is the go-to destination for artisan sorbet and gelato. Diana Kontoprias has won more awards than you could poke a scoop at since she opened in Cronulla in 2002, including gold awards for her Mudslide, Rocky Road, and Boysenberry flavours at the Royal Easter Show.
Ibrahim Pastry, Rockdale
Ibrahim Pastry has been serving up authentic Middle Eastern sweets and pastries in Rockdale for 35 years. One thing’s for sure – you can’t beat the baklava.
Dogma, Cronulla
Hot dog purveyors Dogma also deal sweet treats from gluten-free, vegan dessert geniuses Nutie Donuts with flavours such as Cookie Monster and salted potato chip dark chocolate. Mix it up with a traditional milkshake or a sweet cocktail such as their pineapple daiquiri.
Sir Braxton Chocolate Bar, Rockdale
If it’s covered in chocolate or Nutella, Sir Braxton has got it. They have every dessert delight under the sun on offer, from Oreo churros and blueberry cheesecake to an Oreo Rocky Road waffle tower. If you are cruising for a night in, the Braxton Box lets you get your waffles and churros to go.
Son Of A Baker, Ramsgate
Ramsgate cafe Son Of A Baker is mastering the art of dessert with red velvet lava cake, strawberry croissants, cronuts, and butterfly pancakes. The impossibly pretty butterfly pancakes are packing mascarpone, macadamia crumble, chocolate dust, vanilla ice cream, fresh berries and their in-house berry compote.
Nina’s, Gymea
Nina’s Chocolates is a Shire institution. Nina has a treat for every occasion, including milk chocolate honeycomb thins, raspberry hearts, champagne truffles, hazelnut praline cups and peppermint sundances. If you can’t choose, get a whole box full.
Pancakes on the Rocks, Beverly Hills
A Sydney icon has come to Sydney’s south and transformed the local dessert scene. Obviously, you should eat pancakes – try the strawberry patch, chocolate jewels or the hot and troppo – buttermilk pancakes with grilled banana, walnuts, cream, chocolate ice cream and homemade chocolate sauce.
The Good Filo, Ramsgate
Two words: Greek sweets. The Good Filo has every conceivable Greek dessert in plentiful supply, including galaktoboureko, karithopita, kataifi, trigona, milopita, koulouria, portokalopita, politiko and melomakarona.
Essenze Chocolates, Caringbah
Caringbah handmade chocolatiers Essenze are mixing more flavours than you can count into their tiny, delicious treats. Try the mandarin, rosewater and vanilla chocolate, passionfruit chocolate or pannacotta, raspberry and pistachio.
The Portuguese Bakery, Gymea
If you’re craving Portuguese tarts, Gymea’s Portuguese Bakery is the best place to get your fix. The authentic list of treats also includes strawberry, coffee, raspberry and apple tarts.
Bannos Brownies, Miranda
Yes, Bannos does brownies – but they do so much more than that. Try the Oreo brownie cupcake, the Nutella brownie, the cookies and cream gelato or the M&Ms brownie.
Loukoumades Greek Street, Beverly Hills
If you need a sugar fix with a traditional twist, go and get what’s yours at Loukoumades Greek Street. The Greek donut balls come covered in a range of delectable toppings including Nutella, white chocolate, almonds, strawberries, peanut butter, honeycomb, sweet cheese, pistachio, and salted caramel.
Patisserie New York, Caringbah
Cake is the name of the game at Patisserie New York. The geniuses in the kitchen make their famous flavours miniature so you can enjoy big flavours in sensible portions (if that’s what you really want). Try the citrus cheesecake, sticky date pudding, choc-caramel naked cake, or passionfruit curd with short crust pastry.
Paper and Poppies, Woolooware
Paper and Poppies have a rotating roster of cupcake flavours so you will never run out of options to try. The Woolooware cafe also does mini high teas laden with cupcakes, brownies, cookies, scones and loose leaf tea to your heart’s desire.
Messina, Miranda
Sydney’s gelato institution frequently has queues snaking around the corner at the Miranda Fair courtyard. Salted caramel and white chocolate is one of the icons – but with weekly specials such as PBJ (toasted bread gelato, peanut spread and raspberry jam) and Just A Pinch (salted malt gelato with pretzel clusters), we think it’s okay if you experiment.
Rocksalt, Menai
Rocksalt made a massive impression on Sydney’s dining scene with the fantastic invention of the Golden Gaytime cocktail which took the internet and our hearts by storm. Yes, it has real Golden Gaytime in it, as well as Hershey’s chocolate syrup. Delicious.
