The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Sydney’s southeast has now jumped past 300 – cementing its unenviable status as the state’s worst affected region.
There are now 319 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the South East Sydney Local Health District, which incorporates the Sutherland Shire, St George and Sydney’s eastern suburbs.
The region, which incorporates some of Sydney’s most expensive beachside and riverfront suburbs, now accounts for a quarter of the state’s diagnosed cases.
The Waverley Council area has by far the state’s highest rate of infection, clocking a staggering 105 of the state’s 1219 confirmed cases, followed by Woollahra with 66 and Randwick with 32.
The Sutherland Shire recorded 35 cases in total – more than twice as many as Bayside with 16, and more than three times as many as Georges River with just 10.
The 319 confirmed cases in Sydney’s southeast include a midwife at St George Hospital, a female employee from Bed Bath N Table in Menai, a Cronulla man diagnosed in the early weeks of the pandemic, and several backpackers from the Bondi area.
The SESLHD also provides key support services to residents of Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island, neither of which have recorded any cases of coronavirus.
NSW Health only started providing the numbers of cases broken down by council areas after previously refusing to clarify the numbers beyond a single figure for each health district, no matter how expansive.
