The southern Sydney seat of Barton has once again become a Labor stronghold under first-term MP Linda Burney. Ms Burney will vie with five candidates to retain her seat at the Federal Election on May 18. From Bexley to Brighton Le Sands, these are your candidates for Barton.
LABOR: LINDA BURNEY
Linda Burney was elected federal member for Barton in 2016, following a 13 year career in the NSW Parliament as the Member for Canterbury.
Ms Burney is passionate about preventing domestic and family violence after her own personal experience and was recently appointed Shadow Minister for Preventing Family Violence.
As a proud member of the Wiradjuri nation, Linda was the first Aboriginal person to be elected to the NSW Parliament and the first Aboriginal woman to serve in the Australian House of Representatives.
Ms Burney was previously a teacher before becoming Director General of the Department of Aboriginal Affairs in 2000.
She has also held senior positions in the non-government sector serving on a number of boards including the SBS, the NSW Anti-Discrimination Board, and the NSW Board of Studies.
LIBERAL: PRAMEJ SHRESTHA
Pramej Shrestha grew up locally attending Penshurst Public School, St George Christian School and Georges River College, Oatley Senior Campus.
He holds a Bachelor of Business from Australian Catholic University and has a long history of supporting charities such as the Australian Red Cross.
In 2016, Mr Shrestha was the winner of Mr Nepal Oceania and donated his prize money to help rebuild a school in Nepal.
He said he was passionate about standing up for people who work hard to get ahead and fighting to help local families and small businesses get a fair go, as well as supporting tax relief for families and small businesses.
GREENS: CONNOR PARISSIS
Greens candidate Connor Parissis describes himself as a left-wing activist, student and writer.
Mr Parissis has lived in Barton for most of his life and came out as gay when he was 16.
He has been heavily involved in mental health activism, serving as a youth advocate for Headspace in Camperdown and participated in refugee campaigns, Indigenous rights campaigns, tertiary education campaigns and queer activism.
In 2017 Mr Parissis was the University of Sydney’s queer officer and participated in the Safe Schools campaign and Yes campaign for marriage equality.
Mr Parissis is in support of women’s rights and fighting against cultures of sexual assault.
