Two people injured in Lucas Heights car crash, road closed

Two people have been cut free from their cars following a serious crash at Lucas Heights with the road closed for several hours.

A serious four-car collision has taken place at Lucas Heights, with two people trapped before being extricated and taken to hospital.

Emergency services were called to New Illawarra Rd, between Heathcote Rd and Old Illawarra Rd close to ANSTO about 8.30am on Thursday.

A Fire and Rescue spokesman said four cars, including one towing a boat and another fueled by LPG, collided in the northbound lanes causing two people to be trapped in seperate cars, with a third car ending up in the bush.

He said two rescue trucks were on the scene and technical rescue firefighters removed the sides of two cars to free those trapped inside.

All people involved in the crash, including two young children, were assessed and treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics.

A NSW Ambulance spokeswoman said paramedics were treated six patients, including four adults and two children.

A man sustained chest injuries and fractures and was was taken to Liverpool Hospital in a serious condition while another adult was taken to the same hospital in a stable condition.

Two adults and two children were taken to St George Hospital all in a stable condition.

Police were also on scene diverting traffic and motorists experienced significant delays.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area with the road closed for several hours.
