Sydney Airport has limited pedestrian access to one of its tallest car parks following “recent unsafe behaviours”.
The airport has announced it had restricted pedestrian access to the P6 car park at the International Terminal after a number of incidents.
Safety concerns had reportedly arisen at the top floor of the 12-storey car park, which frequently doubles as a popular plane-spotting site for locals.
“Due to some recent unsafe behaviours, we’ve restricted pedestrian access to certain areas in our car parks,” a statement from Sydney Airport read.
“We understand that this is disappointing, especially since many of our car parks provide a great location for plane spotting.
“We’re working on a solution to restore access to some of these great spotting locations in a way that’s safe for everyone. Thank you for your patience, and watch this space.”
The closure reportedly comes after a video circulated online of youths throwing traffic cones from the top floor of the car park.
However, it is understood prior incidents also contributed to the decision to limit access at the P6 car park, which is one of the tallest public buildings in the Sydney Airport precinct.
News of its closure has caused an upset among the plane spotting community who have labelled the move an example of the “minority ruining it for the majority”.
But Sydney Airport said plenty of other areas were still open to enthusiasts – including dedicated plane-spotting site Shep’s Mound.
Located just underneath the air traffic control tower, Shep’s Mound is the official plane-spotting location for Sydney Airport with direct views of Australia’s longest runway.
The nearby 16R landing, Barton Golf Course and Lady Robinson’s Beach also offer alternative spotting sites.
