Suburban shopping strips in Sydney’s south from the Shire to St George are experiencing a retail revival as NSW increasingly turns to the prospect of a post-pandemic world.

No longer are the corner shops limited to a convenience store for milk, bread and the paper – shopping strips from Wolli Creek to Waterfall are now a destination for homewares, gifts and art for the discerning shopper seeking something a little different.

We have featured 10 stores across the Shire and St George where your morning coffee can come with a side of retail therapy for anyone with a gift to buy or a mini home makeover to complete.

RIVERFOLK, COMO

Riverfolk is a beautiful boutique in Como brimming with carefully curated gifts and homewares.

The store has a strong focus on ethical and sustainable makers and designers, including many Australian small businesses.

In store you can find a range of trinkets and gifts spanning from vinyl records to candles, soft furnishings to books, tableware to picnic rugs and jewellery to stationery.

It is just up the street from Revolution @ Como if you feel like brunch and coffee after you shop.

PAGO & CO, CARINGBAH

If you need a gift, you need look no further than Pago & Co in Caringbah. This business specialises in creating perfect gift boxes without any of the tacky bric a brac.

Pago & Co features a host of artisan makers and small businesses in their bespoke and perfectly presented gift boxes.

You can either select one of their pre-designed gift boxes, or you can build your own from the vast selection of Australian designers and makers including Bespoke Letterpress, Clinq Barware and Port Willunga Fine Foods.

Once you’ve wandered around in store it’s just a short walk for coffee to Grind Industrial.

EDMONDS & GREER, OATLEY WEST

Edmonds & Greer is an Oatley institution, with a popular cafe under the same roof as the stylish destination store.

Edmonds & Greer focuses on quality homewares, gifts and fashion for beautifying your home and your life, created by artisans all around the world.

Some brands on offer include Wonki Ware – dinnerware handmade in South Africa by local residents trained as artisans – as well as ceramics from Marmoset, Prene Bags, The Aromatherapy Company and The Collective Hub.

WE ARE MINDFUL, CRONULLA

We Are Mindful is the brain child of former nutritionist Kathryn Batty, who has sourced gifts and goods from artisan brands around the world that align with her ethos of “consciousness, curiosity and connection”.

The store in Cronulla offers a range of items from beauty and bath products to fashion and swimwear, along with homewares, tableware and art.

A studio in the back of the store is a space where budding creators can learn to make perfume oil rollers, bath bombs, watercolour art and pinch pottery.

MORE LIKE ME, BURRANEER

One of the Shire’s newer homewares stores is tucked behind one of its newer cafes. After you have had brunch at Our Father in Burraneer, you can duck out the back to More Like Me, which has a wide range of beauty products, jewellery and homewares on offer.

Brands featured by the store include Native Page jewellery, Leif beauty and bath products, Business & Pleasure Co beach and home goods and Robert Gordon ceramics and tableware.

GIRL MERAKI, WOOLOOWARE

Interior lovers will get lost inside Girl Meraki in Woolooware. Mother and daughter duo Maria and Paige combined their respective experience in design and floristry to create the homewares boutique, which contains a treasure trove of Australian design and handmade items created locally and around the world.

The homewares – which include accessories for your plants, soft furnishings, tableware, wall art and decor items include vintage, coastal and modern pieces.

Fuel up for a shopping spree at the newly revamped Playground cafe next door.

FRENCH CARGO, RAMSGATE

French Cargo is a French lifestyle store and interior styling service in Ramsgate. Owner Kathie has curated a careful selection of authentic French homewares, fashion, jewellery, candles, soaps, vintage and antique items – along with her particular passion of pure French and European linen.

Special items have been unearthed from French flea markets and both local and overseas artisans and designers to transform your home with a unique worldly touch.

Just over the road shoppers can also pick up coffee and Greek pastries at The Good Filo to make a day of it in Ramsgate.

FOUND THE STORE, ENGADINE

Found: The Store in Engadine stocks a wide range of local Australian designers for everyone of every age in their store.

Brands on offer include Status Anxiety, Elms + King, Angus & Celeste and Ivy & Wood – and once you’ve picked out something from their wide range of beauty and bath products, homewares, jewellery and fashion, they also have the cards and tags to top off your unique gift.

Grab a coffee at The Den next door once you are all shopped out.

B & M FLORIST, MONTEREY

In 1987 owners Bill and Maria took over Monterey Mixed Business and transformed it from a corner store into a florist.

While flowers largely remain the name of the game at B & M Florist, the store also stocks a select range of homewares, trinkets and gifts including vases, candles, chocolate, cookie gift boxes, beauty and bath products.

Pop by after brunch at The Shack, just up the road.

UR PLACE, CARINGBAH

Homewares and furniture are the name of the game at Ur Place in Caringbah.

There is a significant focus on Australian designers, along with some fair trade and sustainable homewares from designers around the globe.

Items are unique and handmade to give your space a special touch that cannot be replicated. Ur Place has the big ticket items for your home – wooden furniture, sofas, armchairs, beds, consoles and bookcases – as well as the beautiful finishing touches such as throws, lamps, cushions, art, linen and tableware.
