Real beer v craft beer taste test

The minds behind Cronulla’s beloved whisky bar have unveiled big plans for a brewery and cellar door where craft beer is both made and drunk in the Sutherland Shire.

The owners of Cronulla’s Blind Bear small bar have submitted plans to Sutherland Shire Council for a brewery and cellar door called Slim Pickin’s Brewhouse in Engadine.

The plans would see a vacant warehouse at 5A Mianga Ave Engadine transformed into a commercial brewery where craft beer can be made but patrons can also sit in and partake in a brew and a food truck meal.

“This is the second business venture by the applicant in the Sutherland Shire, the first being “The Blind Bear” which has become a locally successful small bar in Cronulla and the pioneer of the small bar license in the Sutherland Shire,” the applicants wrote to the council.

“Changes in state legislation will allow for not only the brewery’s own beer to be sold but also other local breweries and wineries to showcase their product.”

The brewery would also offer food from outsourced food trucks and in-house American-style barbecue in the vein of their Blind Bear menu.

The proposal for the former mechanic warehouse includes a new mezzanine, new bathrooms, a cool room and bar, a 1000L brewhouse with fermenters and water tanks for commercial brewing and internal floor space for the cellar door area.

The brewery’s proposed opening hours are 8am to 6pm from Monday to Friday, with the cellar door to operate from 11am to 11pm on Friday and Saturday and until 10pm on Sundays.

The capacity would be 60 patrons inside and 30 patrons outside.

“(The proposal for the brewery includes) ambient music with proposed small bands for special

events,” the applicants wrote.

“The brewery will sell a range of local craft beers and wines with the focus on the beers made onsite in the brewery.”

The plans are now under consideration by Sutherland Shire Council.
