A southern Sydney builder was caught drink driving at more than twice the legal limit the morning after a night of drinking with friends during a golf weekend away, a court has heard.

Ryan Lord, 32, was charged with mid-range drink driving on November 11 after he was pulled over at a stationary breath testing site on The Entrance Rd, Bateau Bay.

Agreed police facts state Lord was caught the morning after he had been drinking when he was on his way to play golf with friends who had travelled to the coast together for the weekend.

“The accused provided a breath analysis sample which returned a result of 0.101,” agreed police facts stated.

“The accused told police he had consumed about nine stubbies of Tooheys New on November 10 (the night before) from 7pm to midnight.”

Lord pleaded guilty to the offence at Downing Centre Local Court on November 29, where he was represented by solicitor Joshua Boorman.

“He hadn’t drunk since the night before,” Mr Boorman told the court. “He woke up around 6pm, he felt fine, he didn’t feel hungover, he had a swim, they had breakfast, they left to go play golf around 8.30am.”

Mr Boorman also told the court Lord was particularly reliant on his driver’s licence to care for his family and conduct his work duties for his Cronulla-based construction company.

The court also heard Lord had attended the traffic offenders program in advance of his sentencing.

Police prosecutor Mr Luthra told the court drink driving was “prevalent” and stated there was a “real need for general and specific deterrence”.

Magistrate David Price convicted Lord, disqualified him for three months backdated to November 11 and fined him $450.

“Drink driving is a crime at any time of the day,” Mr Price said. “His traffic history is not brilliant, his prospects are okay, and he has undertaken the traffic offenders program”.
