Joshua Wright pleads guilty to dangerous driving in fatal Sutherland crash

A young man had pleaded guilty to driving dangerously where he killed his mate and injured his other friend in a horrific car crash in Sutherland last year.

A young Illawong man has admitted he drove dangerously on the night he crashed his car and killed his mate in Sutherland.

Joshua Marcus Wright, 22, appeared in Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday where he pleaded guilty to aggravated dangerous driving occasioning death and aggravated dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm.

He will also plead guilty to back-up charges of negligent driving occasioning death, negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm and having a licence expire less than two years before.

Charges of dangerous driving escaping a pursuit and driving above 45km/h were withdrawn in court.

Wright was behind the wheel when he crashed his car into a power pole on Rawson Ave on April 18 last year.

Police said Sutherland Traffic and Highway Patrol officers attempted to stop a Ford Falcon for a random breath test at Sutherland about 4.14am.

Officers said Wright did not stop and moments later struck the pole.

Police arrived at the crash site and removed all occupants, rendering first aid until paramedics arrived.

One of the passengers, a 17-year-old boy, died at the scene. He cannot be named for legal reasons.

Wright and a second passenger, 21, were taken to St George Hospital where they underwent surgery.

Police established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

A memorial for the teenager was set up at the crash site and a number of items including clothing and signs remain 10 months later.

Wright was charged with a range of driving offences on April 21.

He has not applied for bail since being arrested and remains in custody on remand.

In court on Thursday, Wright was formally committed to be sentenced in the NSW District Court.

The case was adjourned to March 24 to set a date for the sentence.
