A young tradie drove while still under the influence of alcohol and crashed into three parked cars and a fence in Sydney’s south.

Drink driving: A guide to safe drinking

A P-plater who drove into three parked cars and a fence will be required to pay back almost $40,000 in damages, a court has heard.

Jordan Duncan Morrison, 19, pleaded guilty to a charge of mid-range drink driving when he appeared in Sutherland Local Court on Tuesday.

Morrison’s lawyer Sam Saadat said his client was drinking with friends before he took a three-hour nap and thought he would be okay to drive.

Agreed facts tendered to court said Morrison drove his mother’s Honda CR-V on Broadarrow Road, Narwee about 5.50am on June 22 this year at high speed when he lost control.

He collided with three parked cars, a Honda Jazz, Toyota Tarago and Haval, which all sustained damage to the front and rear.

Morrison also smashed into a fence of a home that also needed to be repaired.

Police were called to the scene and Morrison returned a positive breath test.

He was taken to Kogarah Police Station where he blew a reading of 0.083, which is in the mid-range.

Morrison denied drinking alcohol but police reported his eyes were bloodshot, he was unsteady and smelt of liquor, before he was charged.

In court on Tuesday, Mr Saadat said his client was on a payment plan to repay repairs totalling more than $39,000.

He said because his client was intoxicated when he crashed his mother’s car, the damage was not covered by insurance.

The court heard Morrison works full time for a vegetation management company and requires a vehicle to get to work as well as assist his mother with household costs.

Mr Saadat said Morrison needed a licence so he could attend work in order to pay off the debt.

Magistrate Jennifer Atkinson said Morrison should not have had any alcohol in his system when he drove because he was a P-plater.

She noted he was “lucky to walk away” from the crash.

“You took a gamble and it was not worth it. I’m sure your mum is grateful you are standing here in one piece,” Magistrate Atkinson said.

She noted he could have killed someone or himself.

Magistrate Atkinson took into account that he had completed the traffic offenders program and he would be repaying the debt for a long time.

She convicted him and placed him on a community correction order for 12 months.

Morrison was disqualified from driving for three months backdated to the date of the crash and he must have an interlock device fitted to his car.
