Police officers had to pull their guns on a woman who was allegedly armed with a knife and attacked a hospital worker, a court has heard.

Alexandra Elizabeth Porter, 42, successfully applied for bail at Sutherland Local Court on Thursday after she was charged with assaulting a frontline health worker causing actual bodily harm while in the course of their duty; behaving in an offensive manner in a public place and two charges of common assault.

Documents tendered to court state Porter was in Sutherland Hospital’s emergency department about 5am on Wednesday when she allegedly attacked a female worker causing her injury and assaulted another person.

The court heard at one point Porter called triple-0 with police arriving to find her allegedly holding a knife, which she claimed she was going to use on herself.

Police were forced to hold their guns at her until she dropped the knife.

Porter’s lawyer Mary Underwood told the court her client had suffered from severe depression for a decade and was seeing a psychiatrist at a private clinic in Sydney where she had recently been told to stop taking some of her medication.

Ms Underwood said Porter also admitted to taking ice a couple of days before the alleged incident.

The court also heard Porter had two teenage children who she did not live with and she would likely need to take leave from her job so she could address her issues.

Magistrate Philip Stewart said Porter’s alleged behaviour was “extremely aggressive, extremely violent and bizarre” but agreed to grant bail noting she had no other criminal history expect for a mid-range drink driving offence from 20 years ago.

Porter must reside at home, where she lives alone, at Kirrawee, abide by a night time curfew, not enter Sutherland Hospital unless for a medical emergency, not take alcohol or illegal drugs and she must make an appointment with her psychiatrist.

Porter’s case was adjourned to May 11.
