Waratahs U15s rising rugby stars ready to intimidate Queensland Reds plus NSW team

The future of rugby is big, brutal and fast with tall timber from the country, city speedsters and intimidating forwards in the Waratahs U15s side to tackle the Queensland Reds on Sunday.

There’s tall timber, familiar names, rugby league stars and “big body talent” from both city and country clubs in the new Waratahs U15s team named to tackle the Queensland Reds in the first of their annual two match-ups.

There’s also some returning young guns from a year ago, speedsters, good team ethic and a game plan to intimidate their opposites.

The two young rugby Academy sides collide in a curtain raiser to round three of the Super Rugby U16 and U19s series at Forshaw Park in Sydney’s south on Sunday.

And on paper the match-up looks every bit as enticing as the later games.

Coach Craig Roberts said he emerged from a three-day camp with his young charges impressed on a number of levels.

“I was very impressed with the learning and how they bought into the culture … they were really engaged,’’ Roberts said.

“I was impressed with the way they questioned what we were giving them. It was great for us to give them scenarios, setups and systems and then have them question it so it shows they are absorbing the information.’’

Physically he said his squad is “very fast and powerful and our forward pack is big and brutal.’’

“We are looking to intimidate Queensland and dominate the physical battle to allow our backs to have some open space,’’ Roberts said.

“I see confidence and understanding in the backs. They are comfortable playing a ball to another guy in a better position.

“Social wise they are 14 and 15-year-old boys but rugby maturity wise they are at a level of 18 and 19-year-olds.’’

Missing from the action on Sunday will be youngster Tajh Smith who suffered a head knock

“He is still part of the squad and will do everything he can with us,’’ Roberts said.

The team boasts towering country duo Hamish Bull and Lucas Broderick and returning players Iliyaz Viliamu and Hasani Bloomfield along with speedster Phoenix Johns from Kiama, who won the sprint racing at the weekend’s camp.

“The country boys are big humans. It must be all that freshwater and fresh air,’’ Roberts said.
