There were full field tries, plenty of smash and crash, great intercepts, blinding speed and fancy footwork as the best rugby teens under 14 and 15 in NSW battled to impress selectors at the Next Gen Cup in high heat in Sydney on Sunday.
More than 100 players from across city and regional areas played their hearts out at Camden Rugby Club with spots in the NSW Waratahs under 15s squad on the line. SQUAD BELOW
With the teams named after famous NSW rugby players of the past, it was Team Ella who claimed the silverware after two days of matches in Sydney’s south west.
The young side produced the most convincing win of the weekend in the second last game of the event to claim the spoils.
In an entertaining match Team Ella had eight different try scorers in Ed Bryant, Phoenix Johns, Leo Stipe Latu, Sam Polley, Kordell Pritchard, Jack Kalms, Ewan Moody and Christopher Moala with Ed Bryant nailing three conversions in tricky and windy conditions.
TRYING TIMES FOR AUSSIE SCHOOLS
Team Gavin needed to beat the U14 Gen Next U14 Baxter side in the final match to be in contention for the overall win but were beaten by the youngsters 21-19.
Isaac Street, Finn Hannon and Eduardo Garcia-Wood all scored in the crucial match against players a year older than them.
Waratahs under 15s coach Craig Roberts said he was impressed with the talent on display at the annual championship throwing the spotlight on some of the newest names in the game.
“We’ve been really impressed with the depth across the board,’’ he said.
“Their IQ under pressure is what has impressed me the most.’’
Last night the Waratahs unveiled their Tahs under 15s squad to take on the Reds in an upcoming two-game series.
