CELEBRATIONS are continuing after the St Clair Comets A-grade rugby league side won its first-ever grand final on Sunday.

The Comets fought St Patricks for every point to win the game 46-30 in front of a packed Pepper Stadium.

The team was also the most consistent side in the Penrith Juniors A-grade division one competition, winning the minor premiership by a nailbiting point from Brothers.

“We have never won an A-grade final, I think it’s about 25 years,” Comets secretary Bill Borg said. “It’s a great result for the club, the people in the area and the football community.”

The Comets had a point to prove after their hopes were crushed in last year’s decider when they lost to St Marys in the final minutes.

The team was determined to make amends this season, but the St Patricks side made them work hard for the title.

“It was always going to be a hard game,” Borg said.

“Nobody gets in the grand final by chance.

“We were fortunate to get a lead of 30-12 then St Pats came back to make it 30-30.

“The boys had to really dig in for the next 30 minutes.”

Fullback Daniel Smith scored three of the eight St Clair tries and kicked seven goals.

“He scored 26 points for the game which is pretty good for him,” Borg said.

Man of the match was second rower Sarafu Fatiaki.

The weekend was a fruitful one for the Comets with their reserve grade and girls’ teams also winning their respective grand finals.

While the club is still celebrating their hard-earned wins, Mr Borg said it will continue to rebuild and prepare for next season.

“We have got a lot of work to still do,” he said.
