Giselle Quigg is only 130cm tall and a skerrick over 30kg yet she’s a force to be reckoned with in the judo hall.
The 10-year-old, who trains with Blacktown City Judo Club at Blacktown Showground, has won gold in the junior girls’ category at the NSW State Titles for the past two years as well as gold at 2015’s Australian Judo National champs and Sydney Internationals.
“I started practising judo because I wanted to learn self-defence and at my first class I was scared and nervous,” the St John Vianney’s Doonside student said.
“Now I love it because it’s fun and I find it easy. I feel happy and proud when I win but when I don’t I just want to do better next time.”
Giselle, who only started learning judo in 2014, trains four or five times a week, sometimes doing double sessions.
She takes pride in her collection of medals and trophies and finds strength in her family’s support.
“They always encourage me and cheer for me. They’re always there for me and they teach me more,” she said.
Giselle’s father Genvir is one of her biggest fans.
“She has that never-quit attitude, and is always ready to take on what’s in front of her,” he said.
“She puts so much dedication and effort into her training ... and I believe she deserves to get recognition for her achievements in a sport that's rarely noticed in the Australian sports industry.”
