THE Mosman Daily’s 2014 Junior Sports Star winner Will Neuhaus now calls Canada home but still sees himself as “a kid from Kirribilli”.
The high-achieving biathlete and former Marist College North Shore student has moved to Alberta with his family to further his burgeoning sporting career.
Biathlon combines cross-country skate skiing and small-bore target shooting.
Neuhaus, 17, is completing high school at Canada’s National Sport School in Calgary for developing and elite high-performance athletes training in Olympic sports.
Meg Neuhaus said it was “a brilliant and unique opportunity” for her son.
“The school has a flexible syllabus so the kids can better balance their training and competition needs with their schooling,” she said.
The family will return home each Australian winter to enable Neuhaus to compete in Australia and catch up with friends and family.
Neuhaus achieved top five finishes in the Western Canadian Championships and also represented Australia in the 2016 International Biathlon Union Youth and Junior World Championships in Romania.
Neuhaus said his Junior Sports Star win helped him to believe in himself as a sportsman and he encouraged young athletes to work hard and not give up on their dreams.
