TEAM OF THE WEEK: ROUND NINE
1. Diya Sambrane (Gordon)
We’re fast running out of words to keep pace with the relentless Gordon right-hander. Another half century in round nine took her season tally to a breathtaking 389 at 64.83.
2. Keira Terrey (Manly)
After a relatively lean month, the Manly opener quickly regained her rhythm with a brisk 45 off 54. Her seven boundaries were crucial in a match-winning stand with Kaya Punter.
3. Aditi Shidore (Campbelltown Camden)
Aditia keeps churning out the runs and her unbeaten 44 prevented a Ghosts collapse in the win over Sydney. Started the day taking 2/15.
4. Kaya Punter (Manly)
A no-brainer is this team, Kaya virtually took flight as she took the game away from Bankstown. Hit one six and 10 fours in a knock of 67 off 47 balls.
5. Aishleen Gir (Parramatta)
The only one to fully master the Merrylands wicket, the medium pacer stalled Blacktown’s innings with a couple of wickets and returned with the bat, hammering 41 not out of 34 balls in a Parramatta victory.
6. Jorja Horan (Gordon)
The bustling all-rounder continued her golden form in the North Shore Derby. Only needed 18 deliveries to reach 37, and struck three times with her pace to wrap up the contest.
7. Cadence Waters (St George-Sutherland)
In what was developing into a problematic chase against the Swans, when the pressure was at its greatest, Cadence turned the tide with a confident 26 off 25 to help the Slayers across the line.
8. Bella Stevens (Bankstown)
They ultimately fell short of the target, but Bella’s lighting innings of 40 from 46 balls against a strong Manly attack was one of the best of the round.
9. Nicola Hudson (Southern Swans)
Another strong performer in a losing side, Nicola’s measured 34 saved the Swans from collapse and the spinner kept her side in the game with 2/15.
10. Yashika Ramprasad (Penrith)
Fast developing into one of the competition’s most feared bowlers, Yashika’s ability to zip the ball off the wicket caught Uni in the headlights. Her 4/11 takes her season haul to 11 wickets at an eye watering 4.09.
11. Evie West (Greater Hunter)
The Greater Hunter right-armer found her lines early against ND’s. Opened the bowling and walked away with 4/3 off 3.1 overs.
ROUND NINE WRAP
From batting collapses, recoveries and stunning onslaughts, round nine of the U18s Brewer Shield was compulsive viewing.
Gordon maintained their position at the head of the pack, while the Ghosts continued their recovery following a slow start. Full wrap and photo gallery.
SLAYERS STRIKE BACK
A dashing cameo from Cadence Waters has kept St George-Sutherland in second place after the Slayers reversed the horrors of last season to defeat the Southern Swans.
This time a year ago the Slayers folded for an embarrassing 27 in the Southern Derby. Although on Sunday, it was the third ranked Swans who spent the majority of the morning chasing their tail at Harold Fraser Reserve.
Captain Nicola Hudson (34* off 44 balls) and Ebony Winston (21 off 25) guided the visitors to a modest 4/84. In reply, Beth Millican (19* off 21) secured the seven-wicket victory when she clipped Natalia Egan (1/19) to the boundary with six balls to spare.
Libby Burgess (34 off 60) top scored for St George-Sutherland. But it was the left-hander’s partnership of 44 with Waters (26 off 25) that swayed the contest after Egan found Taylor McMahon’s (1 off 5) edge in the third over.
“Cadence came down from second grade and played a great knock,” said Slayers co-coach Andrew Millican.
“She hit four boundaries which was really important because we had a lot of young kids playing today. Her ability to hit hard and put the loose ball away got the innings going after about four overs.
“Sometimes the girls are scared of getting out, so we’ve been working on understanding the importance of finding gaps and turning over the strike. I thought the way Libby, Beth and Cadence went about it was fantastic.”
Hudson (2/15) also proved a force with the ball. The rep spinner threatened to turn the tables with a couple of wickets, while for the Slayers, Ella Cattley had a dream debut.
“It was Ella’s first game, she’s only very young,” said Millican. “She bowled very well and took 2/13 off four overs.”
GIR ON ANOTHER LEVEL
Parramatta has recorded their fifth win of the season after surging past Blacktown by five-wickets with five overs to spare at Merrylands.
Aishleen Gir was simply on another planet for the home side.
On a challenging wicket, Gir’s 2/12 was the pick of the figures as Blacktown, led by Tanishka Reddy (27 off 42) and Athira Kumar (19 off 31), posted 7/85 from their 20 overs.
After Georgia Aldridge (1/22) fired out Kuhu Nanda with the new ball, Gir joined the attack mid innings and promptly shut down any hope of a significant Blacktown total.
On top with a 41-run stand for the second wicket, Reddy and Kumar were perfectly placed to up the tempo before Gir removed both to make it 3/56 in the 15th over.
With the ball, Reddy (2/19) returned serve with two wickets of her own, but it was Gir’s day.
Outside of Sarah Bawcombe (15 off 18), Gir was the only other Parra player to reach double figures.
A consistent scorer for Kellyville Supersonics in the local comp, Gir made batting look easy in a player of the match performance. In 34 balls, she cleared the rope twice and finished 41 not out.
BATTLE OF NORTH SHORE
In the battle of the North Shore, a supercharged Gordon got the better of cross-town rivals North Sydney by 23 runs at Chatswood.
Once again it was Diya Sambrane and Jorja Horan who took the game by the scruff of the neck for the home side.
Batting first, Sambrane’s (50 off 66) summer of excellence continued and with Eveline O’Farrell (22 off 24) the pair added 50 for the first wicket.
When Horan joined Sambrane in the 15th over, it 2/63 and the Bears were well and truly in the contest.
But following on from last week’s blazing half ton against Greater Hunter, Horan thrashed the attack from the get-go. In the space of five and a bit overs, the Gordon score doubled as Horan charged to 37 in just 18 deliveries.
Varada Vinay (1-14, four overs) finished with the pick of the figures, and she immediately returned to the crease as the Bears set off in pursuit of 3/126.
With 34 off 49, Vinay top scored in her side’s 8/103. After dismissing Vinay, Horan (3-11) then wrapped up the tail in another fine all-round performance.
Gordon’s Eleanor Wise-Mann chipped in with 2/10.
GHOSTS UP AND AWAY
In a major upset at Drummoyne, the travelling Ghosts have shocked Sydney by five wickets in a victory that sees them jump to 10th spot on the ladder.
Buoyed by last week’s win over Bankstown, Campbelltown Camden quicks Madison Eddie (1/11) and Trushna Hadawle (1/17) set the standard from the opening overs.
Eddie removed the dangerous Hannah Rose with just one-run on the board, before Sydney’s innings hit a major snag in the 12th over when Zahra de Wit (12 off 27) retired with the score on 3/48.
One of four to reach double figures, Olivia Pelly’s 18 was the best in Sydney’s 6/86.
Aditi Shidore took the honours with the ball, and the leg-spinner followed up her 2/15 with another perfect showing at the top of the Ghosts’ order.
Campbelltown Camden reached the target with 11 balls spare, with Shidore unbeaten on 44 from 54. Sydney’s Tara McCall took the new ball and returned 2/21 from four tidy overs.
PENRITH HAT-TRICK
Penrith continued its surge towards the top-four when they outlasted a gutsy Sydney University at Howell Oval.
The five-wicket win, Penrith’s third on the trot, came with two overs to spare and leaves them in fifth, just half a competition point behind the Southern Swans in third spot.
After edging out the Swans in round eight, Uni headed west and elected to bat in oppressive conditions.
They closed their innings on 6/86, with captain Nadia Carvalho (35 off 55) carrying her bat until she retired in the 18th over.
Off the six wickets to fall two were run outs, while the remaining four went to Yashika Ramprasad. With the score on 35, she sent three of Uni’s top-four back to the pavilion on the way to picking up 4/11 off four overs.
Penrith stumbled to 3/18 in reply as Diksha Chowdhary applied the breaks in a four-over spell that returned 2/5.
Simran Dhatt (31 off 31) and Manorath Gill (20 off 26) revived the chase and put Penrith within striking distance of their sixth win with a 31-run stand.
MANLY PAIR RUN RIOT
Keira Terrey and Kaya Punter were the stars of the show at Manly as the home side defeated Bankstown by 29 runs.
With a round-high total of 3/144, Manly put the result to bed in the first 20 overs. Terrey saw off the new ball, then with Punter, the duo ran roughshod in a second-wicket stand of 110.
Terrey hit seven boundaries in her 54-ball knock of 45, while Punter teed off. Ruthless in her 47-ball stay, the No.3 raced to 67 in an attacking masterclass that included one six and 10 fours.
Bella Stevens (40 off 46) top scored in Bankstown’s 5/115. Matilda Brown was the only multiple wicket-taker for Manly with 2/10 from three overs.
DROUGHT OVER
Greater Hunter ended a month-long drought with a comfortable nine-wicket win over Northern District at Mark Taylor Oval.
Evie West (4/3) and Cosette Thomas (3/4) were the destroyers as the hosts were bowled out for 52.
Opener Mia Gentle top scored with 27 as Hunter completed their fourth victory of the season in the 8th over.
