NSW Gen Blue Cup: Young guns clear winners but major headache for U15 selectors, results

An unexpected team won the silverware at the Gen Blue Cup but selectors face a major headache due to some “unbelievable’’ performances by teens at the event. Match results, latest news.

There was a clear winner - albeit an somewhat unexpected on - at the Gen Blue Cup at Camden Rugby park on Sunday but everything else got a little complicated.

The weekend event, showcasing the best 14 and 15-year-old players in the state, was also to help selectors select a Gen Blue team for an upcoming match against their Queensland Reds opposites.

But Andrew Cleverley, NSW Waratahs head of talent, said it has created a bigger headache for selectors due to some extraordinary and high level performances from some of the 100 young guns who attended the two-day event.

The pressure was on and the future guns of rugby ran with it as they battled for spots in the Gen Blue U15 side to take on the Reds on October 9 in a much-anticipated battle of the sports up-and-comers.

“The outstanding talent has given selectors a big headache,’’ Cleverley said.

“I’m impressed.

“The speed of the athletes and the athleticism across the board has been unbelievable.

“Their speed, size, power, it has all impressed.’’

A squad of 30 will be selected and then narrowed down to 23 closer to the game against the Reds in Brisbane.

Blowing many away was the fact the only undefeated team across the weekend was the youngest in the event.

The U14 Blue side won all four of their matches to win the Cup with Cleverley impressed by the “no rock star’’ attitude of the team lead by Isaiah Sheck and Justice Taumoepeau.

The Blue team ended the event with four wins.
