NORTH Bondi lifesavers have returned from the Australian Championships on the Gold Coast with seven gold medals – the club’s most successful campaign.

The young guns shone brightest for North Bondi Surf Life Saving Club.

The under-17s won their division and took home the National Championship for their age group, earning them a nomination in the Junior Sports Star Award, sponsored by Rebel and our media partner 7 News.

Entered in the Team Spirit category, sponsored by Fox Sports Pulse, the group of a dozen 16-year-olds won six of the club’s seven gold medals.

Club head of sport Andrew Christopher said it was by far their best result at nationals. “We are very happy because we have put lot of investment into our younger competitors in the 14 to 19 age groups,” he said.

“What we achieved at the Australian Titles to take out the under-17s is reflective of that.”

The squad won the most points in the competition among any division, a lofty feat, given the squad was dwarfed by the likes of Manly, Newport and Northcliffe, which had squads of about 30.

Lizzie Welborn (pictured above) won four gold medals in total, individually she won the ironwoman and board race events.

Welborn also teamed up with Ally Christopher to take out the board rescue.

Christopher and Welborn were joined by Emma Thomson who helped them win gold in the board relay.

Welborn also competed in the opens, coming second in the board race.

Twins, and former Junior Sports Star candidates, Amy and Lily Harding Delooze, got first and second in the 2km beach run respectively.

The North Bondi Mermaids also won the Mixed Marchpast.

Last year’s Junior Sports Star winner Josh Stevens won the bronze medal in the 2km run.

In the seniors Sam Annear won gold for the under 19s surf board riding.

Mr Christopher said they held high hopes for a number of the squad’s members.

“We think that some of them are potentially able to compete in the Nutra Grain series which is the elite competition, Lizzie is already operating at that level she is on the cusp of the elite Australian competition.

“It is quite possible (for a lot of the others), if they keep on their current trajectory they will certainly be in the mix.”

The team spirit award is sponsored by Fox Sporting Pulse.
