JUNIOR Sports Star nominee netballer Sheylese Haldane did more than her fair share of work at the 2016 State Age Championships.
The 12-year-old, of Ropes Crossing, played a massive 22 games over three days of competition and her effort won her Penrith District Netball Association’s Rookie of the Year award.
“I was a bit surprised,” the young centre said. “It’s a big award. They said it was because I did really well at State Age.”
Sheylese plays for St Marys Leagues Netball Club and has been with the Penrith development squad since last year.
She so impressed the coaches she was made co-captain of the 2016 Penrith under-12s team.
Her mother, Theresa Haldane said she was glad to see her daughter’s hard work acknowledged, and proud.
“I was shocked but I had a feeling she would get something because she was one of the two girls who played every game for three days,” Mrs Haldane said.
“When she first started playing I didn’t think netball was her game,”
“Then she went into the under-11s development side and she just grew from there. It was like something clicked and she just excelled.
Sheylese’s first taste of netball was in New Zealand. Although she is a loyal Silver Ferns fan, her favourite player is Paige Hadley.
“Paige played for Penrith and she went to my high school,” Sheylese said.
“I just look up to her and she’s a good player.”
