Matthew Riley is the definition of a natural.
The 13-year old has a habit of excelling on the sporting field, whether it be AFL, cricket or rugby league.
Earlier this year Matthew won the U/13 cricket premiership for the Ryde Hunters Hill Pirates, where he was the highest run scorer in the competition.
His rugby league talents are also noteworthy, with his efforts with the Paddington Colts being recognised by the Sydney Roosters who gave him a spot in their U/13 development team.
But despite all his other achievements, Matthew’s preference is clear.
“I really love playing AFL,” he said. “I enjoy playing with my mates and taking marks.
“I really like taking big speckies.”
Matthew is the cornerstone of his North Ryde Dockers team which just won their second straight grand final, with Matthew named best on ground.
His representative honours include the Sydney Juniors and North West representative squads, with Matthew also named best and fairest for the Under 13 Division for the Northern Area.
He is also a member of the Sydney Swans Academy.
“He just has that natural ability which you just can’t teach,” said Matthew’s father Ian. “He’s a natural leader, the way he plays inspires the other kids.
“The most outstanding thing is the fact that he does it so easily, no matter what sport it is.”
Matthew is in the running to become the Northern District Times’ Junior Sports Star of the Year, sponsored by Rebel.
Other categories include Team Spirit, sponsored by SportsTG, Young Sporting Spirit, sponsored by Simonds Homes and Service to Sport.
