For players in the 18 and under NSW Blues and Waratahs teams, the tournament is especially important with a world championships scheduled for later this year.

“It’s an important stepping stone for future success,“ said Scott Nicholson, coach of the Waratahs 18 and under side.

“With the world championships later this year these players will start to be looked at, with a selection champion January and another in April.”

Nicolson said players are urgent to reignite state rivalries in the tournament which kicks off with 16 and under and 18 and under matches.

“We haven’t played anyone from interstate for around two years,” he said.

“To play new players, see you looks, who is looking good, is exciting but it will also be a big challenge.

“In NSW due to Covid they have just played each other over and over and I can’t wait to see other players.”

Almost 60 matches will be livestreamed from the 16 and under and 18 and under tournaments which run from January 10-13 and then the 20 and under tournament from January 17-20.

Nicholson said there were numerous number of players in the 18s and under competition expected to turn heads.

“Just to name a few, Samantha Hardingham is very good. She reads the game well and a great swimmer. She will be crucial for the team,’’ he said.

“Madissyn Powells is a good left hander with good body position, throw the ball hard and is aggressive and doesn’t hold any thing back.

“Victoria Ridhalgh is a really promising goal keeper who has worked hard and makes good decisions and Sienna Green is at the Australian camp with the new coach. She is six foot three and throws the ball like a rocket.’’

In the boys 18 and under comp there is plenty of talent on show

“Will Smith is the best goalkeeper in the game at this stage with a big post presence and very loud,’’ Nicholson said.

“In the Waratahs we have Lucas Young, a right hand driver, very agile, quick off the mark and loves to shoot

“In the Blues there is Eddie Gilmour, a tall strong centre forward. He will generate a lot of attention, teams will need to double team him.

“Rory McKell, a big, tall outside shooter who throws the ball at a million miles and hour.

“Goal keeper Thomas Serhan is six foot five and can reach both posts. He’s one of those big, tall kids.’’
