DAY 4: U18 BOYS GRAND FINAL - NSW BLUES 7 V NSW WARATAHS 6

Despite the brilliant attacking efforts of Harry Underhill, the NSW Waratahs under-18 men’s team just couldn’t quite claw back the early lead of the NSW Blues, going down in the gold medal match 6-7.

Underhill put away one of the Waratahs’ goals and played a key role in their fourth quarter comeback but it just wasn’t enough to get back control of the game.

Waratahs had a sniff at forcing the game into penalties with less than 30 seconds left on the clock but they were unable to hold onto the ball and find a shot at the cage — giving the Blues control for the final seconds of the game.

Blues took the lead early in the first quarter with sharp shooter Ryan Goldschmidt converting a penalty. Hayden Brown followed with the only other goal of the quarter, putting the Blues 2-0 up.

Waratahs managed to sneak two goals back in the third and hold the Blues to just one more goal by the end of the first half.

The pace lifted in the all important third quarter with both teams finding the net twice.

Waratahs tried to claw back the lead or force the game into penalties with a draw but the Blues proved just too strong in defence.

DAY 4: U16 BOYS GRAND FINAL - NSW BLUES 9 DEF QLD MAROON 4

Queensland Maroon had plenty of shots at the cage but NSW Blues keeper Xavier Nicholas made it next to impossible for them to convert chances to goals, helping his team to a 9-4 win in the under-16 men’s gold medal clash.

Nicholas put his long limbs to good use in the cage, stopping the powerful shots fired by the Maroons quarter after quarter. The keeper let just one shot from Queenslander James De Stefani through to the net in the first three quarters.

While Maroons keeper Harrison Cole made some impressive saves he was unable to be the brickwall that Nicholas was.

It was a low scoring first half with NSW putting away four to Queensland’s one.

The home side managed to slip a few past Nicholas in the final quarter but it was not enough to catch up to the quick-firing Blues, who took the gold medal by five goals.

DAY 4: U18 GIRLS GRAND FINAL - QLD MAROON 11 DEF NSW WARATAHS 8

An impressive five-goal haul from Queenslaner Lousia Downes has helped the Maroons to an 11-8 victory against rivals NSW Waratahs in the under-18 women’s gold medal Summer Slam clash.

Downes, who has been consistent in front of the cage all tournament, added five goals to her 23 goal total. The sharp-shooter didn’t cave to the pressure put on by the Waratahs’ defenders and managed to create space and time to slot the ball past the keeper again and again.

It was an evenly matched game with the score tied at 5-5 at the halftime break, but handy goals from Queenslanders Taafilli Taoso and a great backhand from Amelia Watt put the homeside in front by two at the end of the third quarter.

NSW tried to stage a comeback in the final quarter but Downes sealed the deal with her fifth goal putting the Maroons three goals ahead with just a minute left on the clock.

DAY 4: U16 GIRLS GRAND FINAL - NSW BLUES 10 DEF QLD MAROON 9

A stellar shot from NSW Blues’ Nancy Lee has earned the under-16 women’s team a Summer Slam gold medal in a 10-9 thriller after Queensland staged a fourth quarter comeback fit for the record books.

With a little more than 30 seconds left on the clock and scores level, NSW Blues called a time-out with players told to sit on the post — and that is exactly where Lee was when she fired the winning goal into the cage.

NSW Blues had gone into the final quarter ahead 9-4.

But a fired up Queensland Maroons side scored five unanswered goals with rockets coming from Tilly Hughes, Phoebe Cervetto, Matilda Morrow and Sienna Owen to level the scores with just 1 minute 30 seconds left on the clock.

But it was Lee who broke the deadlock and won the Blues the gold medal.

Blues dominated the game early, surging ahead 6-3 by the end of the first quarter. Tight defence and missed opportunities from the Queenslanders led to a scoreless second quarter.

NSW shone in the third, increasing their lead to 9-4.

DAY 4: U18 GIRLS BRONZE PLAYOFF - QLD GOLD 6 DEF NSW BLUES 5

Queensland Gold’s Claudia Czerniawski might have fired home the winning shot in the final seconds of the 6-5 bronze medal win over NSW Blues but it was keeper Horatia Schlect who was the under-18 side’s real hero.

Schlect’s aggressive keeping and impressive shot stopping kept a quick NSW Blues outfit from surging ahead throughout the game.

The game had been tit-for-tat from the first swim-off but it was a rocket long range shot from Gold’s Czerniawski that put the homeside in front and secured them the bronze medal.

New South Wales had picked up a two-point lead by the end of the first half, after earning a handy penalty.

But Queensland Gold’s Olivia Camilliri once again put her powerful arm to good use, slotting several long range shots into the net and a penalty as well.

Defensive efforts of Amy Middlemass, who pulled off two crucial steals in the final quarter, helped Queensland keep control of the game and eventually find Czerniawski in a position to slot the winning goal.

The two sides faced off on Wednesday in another one-point thriller which also went the home side’s way.

Replay: Summer Slam finals - Barbarians v QLD Maroon (U18 boys bronze)

DAY 4: U18 BOYS BRONZE PLAYOFF - BARBARIANS 11 DEF QLD MAROON 7

It was a skilful shot from Barbarians’ Sam McKenzie that all but sealed the under-18 side’s victory in the Summer Slam bronze medal clash against Qld Maroon at Valley Pool.

The teams had been evenly matched with just two goals the difference at the end of the third quarter. With four minutes to go in the final quarter Mackenzie drove a shot into the net, extending Barbarians’ lead to three and putting them just out of reach of the Maroons.

Maroons had plenty of chances to claw back the needed goals but were not able to make the most of their chances in front of goal — sending several wide of the goal.

Both teams had been very evenly matched from the start of the game, scoring just four goals each in the first half.

A sneaky two goals from Barbarians in the third quarter put them ahead 8-6 going into the final quarter.

Maroon’s Will Valentine gave the home side a glimmer of hope after firing a cross cage shot past the keeper but handling errors and faltering to the pressure in front of goal made it hard for the Queenslanders to make up the needed points.

Barbarians sealed the bronze medal match 11-7.

DAY 3: U18 GIRLS GROUP A - QLD MAROON 28 DEF BARBARIANS 2

Queensland Maroon, bolstered by sharp shooter Lulu Elliott, were clinical in their 28-2 defeat over the Barbarians in the final round game of the 2022 Summer Slam.

Elliott fired six goals into the net, adding to the 17 she has already scored so far this tournament.

Maroons, who have dominated the under-18s competition, kept the Barbarians scoreless until late in the third quarter. It was Barbarians Jordan Hughes who found the net for her side’s first goal of the game. Teammate Isabella Donnelley nabbed their final goal in the fourth quarter.

The homeside were consistent in all four quarters scoring eight in the first, three in the second, seven in the third and 10 in the final quarter.

Maroons will take on NSW Waratahs in the final at 11.35am tomorrow.

Replay: Summer Slam - Under-18 girls - Victoria v NSW Waratahs

DAY 3: U18 GIRLS GROUP A – NSW TAHS 15 DEF VICTORIA 7

NSW Waratah’s goal scoring duo of Layla Barclay and Zoe Thomas proved too much for Victoria to handle in the under-18 women’s Summer Slam clash at the Valley Pool this afternoon.

Barclay fired four of her team’s 15 goals into the net, two of them coming in the final quarter, while Thomas put away three.

Waratah’s dominated in the final quarter scoring five final quarter goals.

Victoria, who had scored just three goals in the first three quarters staged a comeback, netting three unanswered goals in the final minutes of the game but it was too little too late.

The game had been within Victoria’s grasp after the first quarter, with NSW ahead 4-1.

While NSW managed to put another three away in the second and third quarters it was the side’s defensive players that helped win them the game, securing a number of turnovers and steals.

Victoria’s Poppy Phillips was a standout, scoring four of her side’s seven goals.

Replay: Summer Slam - Under 18 Girls- Qld Gold v NSW Blues

DAY 3: U18 GIRLS GROUP A – QLD GOLD 10 DEF NSW BLUES 9

It was tit-for-tat from the start of the match but it was Queensland Gold who managed to finish ahead in a thrilling clash with NSW Blues.

Qld Gold and NSW Blue went one-for-one in the first quarter with both sides finding the net three times. It remained a tight battle in the second with either side scoring twice more - going into the halftime break level at 5-5.

The home side’s strong counter-attacks gave them the upper edge over NSW Blues in the third quarter. Queenslanders’ Cate Klinge, Oliver Camilleri and Amy Middlemass all found the net to put their side in front 8-6 going into the final break.

Camilleri proved hard to stop in the final quarter scoring two goals for the homeside early one and extending their lead. NSW didn’t give up though and managed to claw their way back within one point with 20 seconds left on the clock. NSW were not able to get the steal they needed to create an extra chance on goal, leaving Qld the victors 10-9.

Summer Slam -Under-18 girls- Qld Maroon v ACT

DAY 3: U18 GIRLS QLD MAROON 39 DEF ACT 3

Maroons came out firing putting away 10 goals to ACT’s one in the first quarter. Abigale Houston and rising star Lily Carrick proved vital to the home side’s quick start.

ACT’s Lily Austin put her quick reflexes to use to get her team on the scoreboard, firing a rocket into the net off a rebound.

The home side continued to dominate in the second quarter scoring another nine points and keeping ACT goalless. Queenslander Louisa Downes’ speed and counter-attacking skills proved too much for ACT’s defence to handle.

Maroon’s dominating performance continued in the third quarter surging ahead 30-1.

The goal bonanza didn’t falter in the final quarter with the Maroons scoring another 9 points to ACT’s 2.

Replay: Summer Slam - NSW Waratahs v Barbarians (U18 girls)

DAY 3: U18 GIRLS GROUP A - NSW WARATAHS 12 DEF BARBARIANS 6

It was a tight battle to start with both teams pressing high and shutting down passing options but the NSW Waratahs speed and great team plays put them 3-1 ahead at the end of the first quarter.

The Barbarians staged a comeback in the second quarter, keeping the pressure on, but it wasn’t enough to keep NSW from finding the back of the net four more times.

Barbarians were still in the game at the break after scoring two goals.

Waratahs were put to the test in the third quarter and were only able to sneak two past the keeper. Barbarians worked hard to keep themselves in the game and a goal from Holle Smith, following a power play, got them their only goal of the quarter.

Barbarians tried to close the gap but they were unable to make the most of power plays. Poor passing accuracy made it hard for them to keep possession. Waratahs made sure every chance counted - finishing the game 12-6.

Replay: Summer Slam - NSW Blues v Victoria (U18 girls)

DAY 3: U18 GIRLS GROUP A - NSW BLUES 12 DEF VICTORIA 5

It was a close battle in the first quarter with both sides struggling to land a shot in the net.

Turnovers proved costly for Victoria and the Blues a one-goal edge going into the second quarter.

NSW Blues came out firing in the second quarter scoring four quick goals and putting the pressure back on Victoria. It was Victoria’s Sienna Jury who helped put her team back in contention following a great passage of team play.

Not to be outdone, Blues’ Amelia Ritchie powered down the pool with the ball and put a next-to-impossible-to-save shot past the keeper to put NSW five goals up at the end of the first half.

The Blues continued to play a strong attacking game in the third quarter, blowing their lead out to eight goals, going into the final quarter ahead 11-3.

Victoria managed to limit the Blues’ goal scoring run in the final quarter, but their two quick goals in the opening minutes were not enough to get them back in the game.

Replay: Summer Slam - ACT v Qld Gold (U18 girls)

DAY 3: U18 GIRLS GROUP A – QLD GOLD 12 DEF ACT 4

Queensland Gold’s accuracy and speed proved key in their win over ACT.

Gold were able to move the ball around the pool quickly - finding hands and the goal with great precision, while ACT’s handling errors proved a costly error in this clash.

The home side managed to wear down a determined ACT side to score seven goals in the first half.

ACT managed to score twice, with both goals coming in the final seconds of each quarter - Georgia Chapman’s rocket shot from halfway had everyone at the pool cheering, no matter which team they supported.

Qld Gold’s tight defensive structure and speed in the pool slowed down ACT and limited their chances on goal in the third quarter. Gold made sure to capitalise on every chance they created, adding another three goals to go into the final quarter 10-2.

ACT worked hard to keep Qld from running away with the game in the final quarter, conceding just two goals and adding to their own total. The game finished at 12-4.

Replay: Summer Slam - Tasmania v NSW Waratahs (U16 girls)

DAY 3: U16 GIRLS GROUP B: NSW WARATAHS 25 DEF TASMANIA

A fast, quick-firing NSW Waratahs team made it almost impossible for Tasmania to get a shot off.

NSW were relentless from the first swim-off scoring 10 goals in the first half, and keeping Tasmania to nil.

They were quick around the pool and gave the Tasmanian players little room to move. While Tassie lifted its defensive efforts in the second quarter, it didn’t little to stop the accurate and quick-shooting forwards from NSW.

Tasmania’s Keely Saunder came so close to scoring her side’s first and only goal - but it was batted out of the goal before it crossed the line.

NSW didn’t ease off as the goal difference continued to rise putting away 25 by the end of the final buzzer.

Replay: Summer Slam - ACT v Barbarians Gold (U16 girls)

DAY 3: U16 GIRLS GROUP B: BARABARIANS GOLD Gold 15 DEF ACT 3

Barbarians Gold were clinical in their early morning clash with ACT - surging ahead in the first quarter and dominating for the remainder of the match.

Gold netted five goals in the first quarter and managed to keep ACT from making a shot.

Some interesting tactics helped keep the pressure on the Canberra-based side with Gold’s keeper Audrey Kitchen driving the ball up the pool to help create an overload.

ACT did show a glimpse of making a comeback in the second quarter matching Gold’s two goals but the fivegoal deficit at half-time soon exploded to 11-2.

Gold put away another four in the final quarter with ACT managing to slip just one past Kitchen with the game finishing 15-3.

Replay: Summer Slam - Under-16 boys- Queensland Maroon v Barbarians

DAY 2: U16 BOYS QF4: QLD MAROON DEF BARBARIANS 21-1

Queensland Maroon have replicated the dominance of fellow competition heavyweights the New South Wales Blues as the two teams seem on the path for an epic grand final matchup following convincing quarterfinal victories.

After the Blues beat Tasmania 25-1 in their crossover, Queensland showed they could do the same, putting the Barbarians to the sword with a 20-goal win at the Fortitude Valley Pool to progress to the semi-finals.

Maroon were ruthless in their home pool with the Barbarians taking until the last quarter to hit the scoreboard.

Jack Johannesen was in red-hot form for Queensland with five goals while Blake Jennison and Joseph Button had three.

Jesse Stone was the only scorer for the Barbarians.

The result means Queensland will face Victoria in tomorrow’s semi-final.

Replay: Summer Slam - Under-16 boys- NSW Waratahs v Queensland Gold

DAY 2: U16 BOYS QF 3: NSW WARATAHS DEF QLD GOLD 9-1

The Waratahs have booked their spot in an all New South Wales semi-final tomorrow after an eight-goal victory over Queensland Gold in Tuesday’s quarterfinals at the Fortitude Valley Pool.

It was the matchup of each state’s second teams in the quarters and it was the Waratahs who came out swinging, jumping out to a 5-1 lead at the main break.

The dominant first half all but sealed the win for New South Wales but the Waratahs weren’t done there as they kept the foot on the pedal and added four more goals in the second half to end Queensland Gold’s chances of reaching the semi-final.

Nash Kearney, Felix Pal, Ilija Todic and Ashwin Sivapirabu all scored two goals each for the Waratahs while Morgan Hughes also scored for New South Wales, who will face the undefeated Blues for a spot in the grand final tomorrow morning.

NOTE: unfortunately part of the fourth quarter is missing from the above stream.

DAY 2: U16 BOYS QF 2: VICTORIA DEF ACT 11-5

Star performances from dynamic duo Daniel Magasanik and Pavle Macic has led Victoria to a convincing win over ACT in the Under-16 Boys quarterfinal to earn a spot in tomorrow’s grand final qualifiers.

The Victorian pair scored seven goals between them with Magasanik finding the back four times and Macic hitting the scoreboard three times as their team bounced back from a loss against competition heavyweights, the New South Wales Blues earlier today.

Patrick Healy also scored two goals for Victoria while Koebe Nay and William Ball also scored for the victors.

Victoria will play their semi-final at 11.15am tomorrow while ACT will play at 9.05am.

DAY 2: U16 BOYS QF 1: NSW BLUES DEF TAS 25-1

A 24-goal quarterfinal demolition of Tasmania has helped the New South Wales Blues become the first team to book their spot in tomorrow’s semi-finals.

The undefeated New South Wales finished on top of Group A while the winless Tasmania finished fourth in Group B and the disparity showed as the Blues dominated from the opening whistle and for all four quarters.

New South Wales showed once again why they are considered favourites to take out the under-16 boys tournament, scoring at will and giving nothing up to Tasmania on the defensive end.

The Blues will play their grand final qualifier at 10.10am at Stuartholme Aquatic Precinct while Tasmania will play at 8am.

DAY 2 - U16 BOYS GROUP A: QLD GOLD DEF BARBARIANS 13-8

Queensland Gold are finally on the scoreboard, beating the Barbarians by five goals to record their first win of the tournament.

Gold quickly swam out to an early 6-1 lead in the first half but the Barbarians fought their way back into the contest, finding the back of the net seven times in the second half to make the score respectable.

The result booked Queensland a quarterfinal matchup with the NSW Waratahs, while Barbarians will face a red-hot Queensland Maroon side in the crossovers.

DAY 2 - U16 BOYS GROUP A: NSW BLUES DEF VICTORIA 13-9

The NSW Blues have fought off a tough challenge from Victoria to earn a four-goal victory and remain undefeated after one of the most physical contests of the Summer Slam series yet.

NSWs, who are the favourites to take out the tournament, couldn’t pull away from Victoria early on in the game but still went into halftime break with a lead.

The Blues extended their lead early in the second half and looked like they would run away with the game, but Victoria continued to fight late into the fourth quarter to reduce the deficit to just four with a minute to go.

The win was NSW’s third in a row and they finish on top of Group A.

Replay: Summer Slam U16 boys - Tasmania v NSW Waratahs

DAY 2 - U16 BOYS GROUP B: NSW WARATAHS DEF TASMANIA 14-3

NSW Waratahs have bounced back from a disappointing loss on Monday afternoon to record a 11-goal victory over Tasmania in their last group game.

The Waratahs came into the game with one win and one loss, going down to group leaders Queensland Maroon 21-3 late on day one, but they looked determined to turn that around, jumping out to an early lead in the first half and never looking back.

Tasmania continued to fight but couldn’t find a way back into the game and remain winless after three games.

The win sealed second spot in Group B for New South Wales.

DAY 2 - U16 BOYS GROUP B: QLD MAROON DEF ACT 21-3

Replay: Summer Slam U16 boys - Qld Maroon v ACT

Queensland Maroon have started day two in dominant fashion in the Under-16 Boys competition at the Fortitude Valley Pool with a 19-goal drubbing of the ACT.

Queensland were a class above from the outset, rushing out to a convincing 12-0 lead at halftime as they looked to build on their impressive performances from the first day of the tournament, where they won both games comfortably.

ACT provided some fight in the second half, hitting the scoreboard in the third quarter and finishing with three goals, but Queensland were too good, establishing themselves as one of the tournament favourites.

Queensland Maroon will play their quarterfinal at 4.45pm after finishing top of Group B.

DAY 1 — U18 BOYS GROUP A: BARBARIANS DEF ACT 14-10

The Barbarians have completed an undefeated first day of the Summer Slam tournament with a four-goal victory over the ACT to end Monday’s schedule.

Following a win over Queensland Maroon earlier in the day, the Barbarians once again looked the better of the two teams, pushing out to a slender lead early on.

But like their first game, ACT wouldn’t go away and continued to battle to have a chance of a comeback.

However, the Barbarians were too good and finished day one with two convincing wins.

DAY 1 — U18 BOYS GROUP A: NSW BLUES DEF VICTORIA 18-7

New South Wales Blues have put on a clinical display to convincingly beat Victoria by 11 goals and confirm their status as the tournament favourites.

Following an easy win over ACT, the Blues were too good at every position in the pool to complete an undefeated day one for teams from New South Wales with the Waratahs also without a loss after the first day.

The Blues will play the Waratahs on Tuesday afternoon.

DAY 1 — U18 BOYS GROUP A: NSW WARATAHS DEF QLD GOLD 14-8

The New South Wales Waratahs have capped-off a dominant first day of the Water Polo Australia Summer Slam series, going undefeated with a six-goal victory over Queensland Gold in their second match of the competition.

Both teams went into the clash full of confidence with the Waratahs causing an upset of Queensland Maroon while Gold earned a hard-fought win over Victoria to start their tournament.

But it was Scott Nicholson’s New South Wales side who proved too good in both attack and defence as the Waratahs swam away with the game in the second half despite a late consolation goal from Queensland.

The win sets up a big clash with tournament favourites and fellow New South Welshmen, the Blues on day two at Musgrave Park.

Replay: Summer Slam - Under-18 boys - Barbarians v Qld Maroon

DAY 1 — U18 BOYS GROUP A: BARBARIANS DEF QLD MAROON 14-11

The Barbarians have recorded the second upset of the day after a dominant first half helped them earn a three-goal victory over the winless Queensland Maroon.

Full of players from different clubs and states, the Barbarians only met each other in the days leading up to the Summer Slam but had the chemistry of a team which had played together many times before.

The Barbarians jumped out to a 9-4 lead at the main break and extended that advantage to 11-5 at the end of the third quarter.

Queensland managed to find some form in the fourth, scoring six goals to three, but it was too late as the home side ended their first day with two losses.

Replay: Summer Slam - Under-18 boys - NSW Blues v ACT

DAY 1 — U18 BOYS GROUP A: NSW BLUES DEF ACT 13-9

The New South Wales Blues have shown why they are the favourites to take out Water Polo Australia’s Summer Slam series after overcoming a valiant ACT outfit to record a four-goal victory to start their tournament.

New South Wales jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the first half and increased their advantage to five goals in the second quarter as the competition powerhouse looked like running away with a convincing win.

ACT then found their form in the second half, creating more scoring opportunities and making the Blues work for everything to reduce the deficit.

But class shone through in the end for the Blues as they continued the dominant start to the tournament for New South Wales teams after the Waratahs’ upset over Queensland Maroon earlier in the day.

Replay: Summer Slam - Under-18 boys - Victoria v Qld Gold

DAY 1 — U18 BOYS GROUP A: QLD GOLD DEF VICTORIA 6-5

A late goal to Josh Rasmin has helped Queensland Gold escape with a narrow victory over Victoria and open their tournament with a win in the Under-18 Boys competition.

Victoria looked on track for an impressive performance early on day one, holding a 3-2 lead at halftime with goalkeeper Oliver Purcell the star of the first half with several incredible saves.

But the third quarter belonged to Queensland as the home side scored three goals and kept their opponents scoreless to turn the tables on Victoria and go into the final quarter with a 5-3 advantage.

Victoria were not done yet though as they climbed their way back to be level at 5-all with just four minutes left but they couldn’t hold out a late attack from Queensland as Rasmin found the back of the net to hand his team the victory.

Replay: Summer Slam - Under-18 boys - NSW Waratahs v Qld Maroon

DAY 1 — U18 BOYS GROUP A: NSW WARATAHS DEF QLD MAROON 17-12

The New South Wales Waratahs have started the Water Polo Australia Summer Slam series in Brisbane with a major upset, fighting off a late comeback to beat Queensland Maroon in the opening game of the tournament.

New South Wales, the seventh seed heading into this week, got off to a flyer at the Fortitude Valley Pool against the second-seeded Maroons, leading 11-6 at halftime.

But a high scoring third quarter helped Queensland reduce the deficit to just two goals going into the final period.

However, New South Wales’ defence managed to hold off Queensland’s attack and Lucas Young put the finishing touches on an impressive opening victory for the Waratahs.
