Replay: NSW U18 boys hockey titles: Day Two fixtures

The best young hockey players from across the state have competed across two days to be crowned state champions. Replay every streamed match from day two.

The on-field action was fast and furious on day one of the 2021 under 18 NSW boys hockey championships, with teams competing today for a finals berth.

The teams to beat appear to be hometown heroes Illawarra South Coast and defending champions Newcastle, following impressive opening day performances.

A continuous feed of live hockey action will be broadcast online here at dailytelegraph.com.au from about 7:50am Saturday on day two of the titles.

MATCH 11: CENTRAL COAST 6 METRO SOUTH WEST 0

Replay: U18 Boys NSW State Hockey Championships – Central Coast v Metro South West 1

Central Coast has trounced Metro South West in the opening match of day two, putting away six goals to nil in a comprehensive win.

A great finish in the opening minutes saw Central Coast with the early lead, but Metro South West kept the pace in a tight opening quarter with strong defence from each side.

A classy movement kicked off by Central Coast #17 sent a lovely ball through defenders for a nice deflection by his teammate past the goalkeeper to double the lead.

Two goals scored in each of the final two quarters put the result beyond question, with Central Coast running away with the victory 6 nil.

MATCH 12: ILLAWARRA SOUTH COAST 3 SYDNEY EAST 2

Replay: U18 Boys NSW State Hockey Championships – Illawarra South Coast 1 v Sydney East 1

A seesawing affair between Illawarra South Coast and Sydney East has ended with the hometown outfit taking the spoils, as both sides traded goals across the match.

Illawarra South Coast started strong with Sam Wright-Smith making no mistake with a penalty stroke five minutes in, giving his team a healthy 1 nil lead.

Sydney East wasn’t intimidated by the early goal and began to build momentum which was rewarded with a goal to Rian Surti with a nice deflection into the goal in the second quarter.

Illawarra South Coast returned to the lead in the third quarter with slick stickwork by Michael Arthur attracting a number of opposition defenders, leading to a goal to Luke Potter.

Individual brilliance by Sydney East’s Jett Leong saw the teenager jostle through a number of Illawarra defenders before slamming in a low and hard strike to equalise.

A second successful penalty stroke to Illawarra South Coast’s Wright-Smith was enough to seal the win in a tight affair.

MATCH 13: SYDNEY SOUTH 6 FAR NORTH COAST 2

Replay: U18 Boys NSW State Hockey Championships – Sydney South v Far North Coast

Sydney South has proven to be a class above their Far North Coast opponents, running away with a 5 – 2 victory.

The boys from Sydney South scored an early goal with Christopher Goodman given the ball one-on-one with the goalkeeper and calmly put it away.

A second goal shortly followed before Far North Coast scored their first goal of the tournament in the second quarter.

South Sydney responded quickly with the striker putting away a fantastic finish after a big wind-up, resulting in a 3 -1 scoreline at halftime.

Far North Coast’s Finnigan Robinson gave his team hope with the first goal of the second half but it was all Sydney South for the rest of the game.

Three goals in the final quarter, including two to Zakary Keelan in the space of a minute, was enough to ensure a 6 – 2 victory.

MATCH 14: NORTH WEST SYDNEY 2 METRO SOUTH WEST 0

Replay: U18 Boys NSW State Hockey Championships – Metro South West 1 v North West Sydney 1

North West Sydney’s winning ways could not be stopped by Metro South West, who went down 2 nil in their last pool game of the tournament.

The equally-matched sides battled it out across the early stages before an early goal in the second quarter to North West Sydney opened the scoresheet.

Metro South West hustled to try and get back into the contest but ultimately went down 2 nil.

MATCH 15: NEWCASTLE 5 SYDNEY EAST 1

Replay: U18 Boys NSW State Hockey Championships – Sydney East 1 v Newcastle 1

The defending champs Newcastle have overpowered Sydney East, running after 5 -1 winners after trailing early.

A tight opening quarter took place with Sydney East fighting to stay in semi-finals contention before the underdogs opened the scoring in the second quarter.

Jett Leong latched on a loose pass and struck home the opening goal, his fifth for the tournament to have Joshua Bruton level proceedings off a penalty corner minutes later.

Britton made it a hat trick in the third quarter, scoring off a penalty stroke and a nice flick shot.

Lukas Gremm and Edward Hunt added their names to the scoresheet in the final quarter, rounding out a strong 5 – 1 victory to Newcastle.

MATCH 16: TAMWORTH 4 NEW ENGLAND 1

Replay: U18 Boys NSW State Hockey Championships – Hockey New England v Tamworth

Tamworth ‘Frogs’ have proven to be too good for Hockey New England, running away as 4-1 winners.

The Tamworth team threatened the goals of their opponents frequently across the opening stages with the pressure ultimately paying off after the opening quarter.

The lead was doubled off the stick of Chris Taggart at the start of the third quarter, with teammate Ryan Taggart scoring shortly after to extend the lead to three.

A goal in the final quarter saw Tamworth with a 4 nil lead, however a well-deserved goal to New England off a penalty corner in the final minutes saw the final score read 4 -1.

MATCH 17: SYDNEY SOUTH 1 NORTH WEST SYDNEY 0

Replay: U18 Boys NSW State Hockey Championships – North West Sydney 1 v Sydney South

Sydney South has celebrated a hard-fought 1 nil win over the undefeated North West Sydney team to keep their semi-final hopes alive.

A first quarter goal to the boys in sky blue ultimately proved the difference, with defence winning the battle for the rest of the clash.

Sydney South are relying on results to go their way to remain in the running for a semi-finals match on Sunday.

MATCH 18: CENTRAL COAST 3 FAR NORTH COAST 0

Replay: U18 Boys NSW State Hockey Championships-  Far North Coast vs Central Coast

Central Coast has locked down top position in Pool B with a strong 3 nil win over Far North Coast.

The talented outfit from northern NSW kept pace with Central Coast in the early stages of the match but went to halftime 2 nil down.

A classy finish in the final stages of the third quarter by Finlay Healey, following impressive stickwork from teammate Bailey Figallo, iced the game for a 3 nil win.

The Central Coast team will take the field at 9:15am Sunday in a semi final clash against the runner up of Pool A, with Far North Coast to fight off relegation from Division 1 at 10:30am

MATCH 19: NEWCASTLE 9 NEW ENGLAND 0

Replay: U18 Boys NSW State Hockey Championships- Newcastle 1 v Hockey New England

Newcastle has dominated in their final pool game of the tournament, scoring nine goals in a demolition of New England.

Edward Hunt launched the complete performance with two goals inside a minute in the opening quarter, including a powerful tomahawk strike.

Lukas Gremm with a tomahawk strike put his name on the scoresheet in the opening quarter, before the defending champions unleashed in the second quarter.

Four goals inside the space of six minutes were added, including a hat trick to Lukas Gremm, for the score to race to 7 nil.

Late goals sealed a 9 nil win for Newcastle, with Flynn Thompson and Oliver Rollings among the goalscorers.

Newcastle will play in a semi-final match at 9:15am Sunday.

MATCH 20: ILLAWARRA SOUTH COAST 1 TAMWORTH 0

Replay: U18 Boys NSW State Hockey Championships- Tamworth v Illawarra

Hometown favourites Illawarra South Coast have sealed their spot in the state championships semi finals, with a lone goal to captain Sam Wright-Smith proving the difference against Tamworth.

The ‘Frogs’ had the best of the early opportunities with Chris Taggart’s shot narrowly missing the goal following classy lead-up play in the first quarter.

A second opportunity just went wide off a penalty corner by Tamworth in the next quarter, with Illawarra South Coast also missing a golden opportunity with a deflection shot off a penalty corner rolling across the face of goals.

Midway through the final quarter the deadlock was finally broken, with a Luke Potter run ending with the ball on Wright-Smith’s stick who struck the ball home in the top corner.

Illawarra South Coast will play Central Coast in a semi-final at 9:15am Sunday, with Tamworth to battle Sydney South for fifth place.
