Livestream NSW U18 boys hockey titles: Day One replay

There have been goals galore at the NSW U18 boys hockey championships. Replay every streamed match from day one.

Ten tantalising matches featuring the best young male hockey talent in the state will be live streamed today, as day one of the 2021 under 18 NSW boys hockey championships gets underway at Illawarra Hockey Centre.

A continuous feed of live hockey action, beginning with the opening fixture between Sydney East 1 and Tamworth 1, will launch about 7:50am and can be viewed on the player above.

MATCH 1: ILLAWARRA SOUTH COAST 7 NEW ENGLAND 0

Replay: U18 Boys NSW State Hockey Championships – Hockey New England v Illawarra South Coast 1

It was goals galore in the opening match of the NSW under-18 boys hockey championships, with the hometown heroes launching their title campaign in style.

The Illawarra South Coast outfit, stacked with state representatives, took control of the fixture against Hockey New England from the opening whistle going forward with all the early momentum.

About seven minutes in, Scott Crisafi sent home the opening goal for the hometown team, followed by a powerful drag flick goal off a short corner to captain Sam Wright-Smith a few minutes later.

Illawarra South Coast’s Michael Arthur finished a nice movement by Oliver Hawker to take a 3 nil lead to the first quarter break.

A spirited effort by New England goalkeeper Hayden Schumacher kept the scoreline stable until halftime, however three second-half goals to Crisafi and a single goal to Thomas Duncan in the final minutes saw the match finish as 7 nil.

MATCH 2: TAMWORTH 1 SYDNEY EAST 0

Replay: U18 Boys NSW State Hockey Championships – Sydney East 1 v Tamworth

A closely-fought match between Tamworth and Sydney East Hockey Association went down to the wire with a third-quarter goal to Tamworth’s Nicholas O’Connor proving the difference.

The evenly-matched outfits swapped scoring opportunities in the opening periods of the clash, with the Tamworth ‘Frogs’ beginning to claim the momentum in the later stages of the first half.

Just two minutes into the second half Nicholas O’Connor took advantage of a penalty corner and sent a lovely low drag flick into the goals for a 1 nil lead.

The Sydney East team pushed hard to equalise the match with the best opportunity coming just five minutes before the final whistle, however the shot was knocked away by the foot of Tamworth goalkeeper Sam Griffith.

The Frogs would be relieved to have walked away with the points in the tight contest.

MATCH 3: CENTRAL COAST 4 SYDNEY SOUTH 0

Replay: U18 Boys NSW State Hockey Championships – Sydney South v Central Coast

The young men from the Central Coast proved to be too much for the Sydney South outfit, taking advantage of ill-discipline to walk away with a 4 nil victory.

Midway through the opening quarter Central Coast got on the score sheet for the first time, taking advantage of a penalty corner to power the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal.

After half time the lead was doubled courtesy of another penalty corner, with a deflected drag shot landing in the goals.

With the safety of two goal buffer Central Coast went from strength to strength in the final quarter, with a second deflected shot ending in the goals before Nicholas Reid in jersey #11 iced the game with a goal just seconds before the final buzzer.

Central Coast would be pleased to have chalked a strong win to launch their campaign.

MATCH 4: METRO SOUTH WEST 3 FAR NORTH COAST 0

Replay: U18 Boys NSW State Hockey Championships – Metro South West 1 v Far North Coast

The Metro South West Hockey representative outfit earned a convincing win against their Far North Coast opponents, chalking three goals to nil.

The southwest Sydney boys were on top early proceedings with threatening attacking raids blocked by sharp goalkeeping by Xavier Cook, twice thwarting efforts on goal by MSW’s Tybie Foster.

In the second quarter the southwest Sydney outfit first troubled the scorer with Ethan Brooks sending home a classy finish, controlling a bouncing ball following a blocked penalty corner to score.

With a second goal scored before halftime the Far North Coast team were staring down a heavy loss, but steadied the ship with a more balanced performance.

A late goal to Metro South West saw the match finish as a 3 nil victory, with goalscorers of Brooks, Kye Sutherland and Blake Stallard.

MATCH 5: SYDNEY EAST 9 NEW ENGLAND 0

Replay: U18 Boys NSW State Hockey Championships – Sydney East 1 v Hockey New England

Sydney East have heaped the misery on New England at the state championships, obliterating their opponents with a comprehensive 9 nil victory.

The city team suffered a 1 nil loss in their opening match but came out of the blocks firing, with Keiran Brook scoring after just three minutes.

Just minutes later the score was doubled courtesy of a Jett Leong finish, who scored his second in the next quarter thanks to an assist from Brook.

Matthew Thompson finished a silky team attack at the back post for Sydney East to take a 4 nil lead to the half time break.

A low flick to Leong in the third quarter brought about his hat trick, with goals to Oskar Smith, Mehdi Rizvi and a second to Thompson seeing Sydney East finish as 9 nil victors.

MATCH 6: NEWCASTLE 2 ILLAWARRA SOUTH COAST 2

Replay: U18 Boys NSW State Hockey Championships – Illawarra South Coast 1 v Newcastle 1

Two of the competition heavyweights in Illawarra South Coast and Newcastle battled it out in an action-packed opening day clash.

Newcastle, searching for their fourth successive under-18 title, went behind early as Illawarra captain Sam Wright-Smith made no mistake with a short corner and unleashed a powerful drag flick into the goal.

The Illawarra South Coast team soon doubled their lead and looked certain to run away with the victory, however a classy finish by Oliver Rollings brought the match back to life in the third quarter.

The Illawarra South Coast goalkeeper Dylan Simmons was kept busy in the closing stages and made a series of critical saves using his hockey stick, but the Newcastle pressure was too much with Jonathan Gremm equalising the match with just minutes remaining.

The final scoreline was 2 -2.

MATCH 7: NORTH WEST SYDNEY 3 CENTRAL COAST 2

A spectacular come from behind win was celebrated by North West Sydney after they defeated Central Coast in an end-to-end clash.

Central Coast went to half time with a 2 nil lead, which included a classy finish with the attacking player calmly striking the ball past the goalkeeper to score.

North West Sydney looked out of the match until a goal off a short corner was scored in the third quarter by Liam Phelan, followed by a reverse scoop strike to Adam Watson which equalised the game.

With all the momentum, a diving strike by William Shaw in the final stages of the match sealed the comeback win for North West Sydney.

MATCH 8: SYDNEY SOUTH 1 METRO SOUTH WEST 0

Replay: U18 Boys NSW State Hockey Championships – Metro South West 1 v Sydney South

A tense clash between Metro South West and Sydney South went down to the wire, with a single goal splitting the teams in a gripping contest.

Metro South West, who comfortably handled Far North Coast earlier in the day, appeared likely in front of goals at stages throughout the match however it was Sydney South which netted the first goal.

As both teams battled for precious points in the search for a finals berth, Metro South West pressed forward in search for the critical equaliser but ultimately were without luck.

Sydney South won the match 1 nil.

MATCH 9: NEWCASTLE 2 TAMWORTH 1

Newcastle, one of the competition heavyweights, had a narrow escape on the opening day after winning in the final moments against Tamworth.

The Novocastrians raced to an early lead off the stick of Lukas Gremm and looked destined to take charge of the rest of the match.

The tenacious Tamworth outfit stayed in the contest and sent home an equaliser in the third quarter.

Newcastle threatened to score throughout a tense final quarter and finally struck home the winner off the stick of Edward Hunt in the final minute, following a defensive error.

MATCH 10: NORTH WEST SYDNEY 5 FAR NORTH COAST 0

Replay: U18 Boys NSW State Hockey Championships – Far North Coast v North West Sydney 1

A dominant display by North West Sydney was too much to handle for the Far North Coast, taking out the final fixture of the opening day 5 nil.

The city-based team enjoyed all of the early momentum and first troubled the score in the second quarter, with the striker sending home a classy drag flick into the bottom left corner off a penalty corner.

Adam Watson doubled the lead late in the same quarter with some silky stickwork close to goal, beating two defenders and the goalkeeper for North West Sydney to take a 2 nil lead to halftime.

Maurits Flokstra finished off a nice attacking raid in the third quarter to bring about a 3 nil lead, with Adam Watson scoring only minutes later.

North West Sydney finished 5 nil victors in an impressive performance.

About 1400 players will take the field across the three days.

The championships will showcase about 1400 talented hockey players from across the state, with NSW selectors searching for the next crop of youngsters with a squad of about 50 athletes to be selected with a view to next year’s national championships.

The winners of the last three championships was Newcastle Hockey Association, who will be aiming to make it four in a row.
