Kellyville Rouse Hills Magpies celebrate five teams playing in season deciders

It was a big day for clubs from the Kellyville Rouse Hills Magpies AFL club with five teams making it into the grand final.

The silverware won by the Magpies on the weekend.

A decision to invest in pathways for girls wanting to play AFL is already paying dividends for the Kellyville Rouse Hill Magpies.

Three of their five teams in weekend grand finals ended up with the top honours in the Sydney west junior AFL competition.

And two of those five teams in the season decider were girls teams.

It is something the club, which boasts more than 500 members and has been going since 2002, is proud of.

The silverware won by the Magpies on the weekend.

“We have a pathway set up for girls football and we are really proud of this,” said Greg Thomas, vice president of football operations.

“We have five girls teams in under 11s, under 13s, two in 15s and an under 18s

“We are quite rare covering from age 11 to 18.

“I think it is something we promoted really well.

“It has just grown, I think also because of the AFLW.

“Seeing the girls play shows them there is a pathway as well.”

The under 14s team at the end of their grand final.

The AFLW provides both inspiration for young females and a potential career when they are older.

On the weekend the under 13s and under 14s division two teams and the girls under 15s division one side won their grand final.

The under 13s division one side and the under 15 division two side were runners-up.

“The under 15s division one girls went through undefeated and then on to win the grand final,” Thomas said.

“The girls division two under 15s lost one game all year.’’
