Elissa Tennant’s competitive spirit has propelled her into football’s most elite levels, with the 11-year-old joining Sydney Olympic FC this year.
The rising star was recruited by the semi-professional football club after undergoing trials and is now a member of its under-13 girls team.
Elissa was also recently chosen to represent the state at a national competition held in Perth in August.
Mum Lisette Tennant said it was an unexpected surprise.
“She started with her friends and it built into a love of the game. She’s very fair and a team player. Her position is defender, so she reads the whole game,” Ms Tennant said.
Football is very much a family sport in the Tennant household, with Elissa’s older brother also a football star.
“My husband is a soccer coach. He’s always loved it so both my kids play,” Ms Tennant said.
Elissa trains three nights a week and also takes swimming lessons.
“Elissa has always been into the traditional girls’ sports. She always wants to get better. She’s not scared, she’s quite tough,” Ms Tennant said.
Elissa is The Express’ latest nominee for the Junior Sports Star award, sponsored by Rebel.
