When life throws you lemons, sometimes you have to make lemonade.
Field player James Doherty suffered a broken nose playing hockey which forced him into goals.
He was then selected to represent NSW in the under-15s indoor national championships in January this year.
The Campbelltown hockey player is this week’s Macarthur Chronicle rebel Junior Sports Star nominee.
He also was selected in the under-18s NSW Blues, the CHS state open team, under-16s NSW All Schools team and the under-16s Australian All Schools team to play in Mannheim, Germany in May next year.
After following his sister into playing the game, Doherty developed a passion for the sport and is a dedicated hockey player.
He is a member of the Hockey NSW accelerated athlete program and coaches an under-11s team in his spare time. Doherty says his biggest achievement so far is being selected in the under-16s Australian school boys’ team to tour Europe next year.
“I was overwhelmed when I was selected and extremely happy,” he said.
“My long-term goal is go as far as I can in the sport and hopefully play at the Olympics.”
