AS A former dancer, Nycora Fortt certainly has the moves to hit the big time in diving.
The 10-year-old Riverstone athlete has put his promising dance career on hold to pursue success in diving, and it’s paid off with a silver medal in the 5m springboard and bronze in the 1m at the National Australian Age Championships.
This was an improvement on his bronze medal at the 3m springboard and fourth in the 1m event at last year’s nationals.
This week’s nominee for the Junior Sports Star Award has the remarkable achievement of winning medals at all diving events he has contested this year.
“I train with Parramatta Diving and also did a short stint with NSW Institute of Sports,” said Nycora, who took to diving just two and half years ago.
“I love dancing but have put it on hold to concentrate on diving. I’m lucky that I train alongside (Olympic champion) Matthew Mitcham and (Olympic medallist) Melissa Wu and they have given me a lot of advice.
“I try not to think of anything but my dive when I’m on the platform.”
In March, the Australian Christian College student won the gold medal in the 3m springboard in the open boys category and silver on the 5m platform (under 11 boys) at the Combined Independent Schools Swimming and Diving Carnival.
Nycora’s dancing moves, especially his ballet, give him a graceful lead up to the dives.
But this is just one of the many skills which are giving him an edge in this highly competitive sport.
