ROUND ONE WRAP + GALLERY

It was the round of the underdog as some of the less fancied teams showed they will be a force to be reckoned with in the Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership.

We take a look back at the weekend that was on the opening round of the premier women’s competition.

MOUNTIES 8-4 ILLAWARRA

A low scoring affair at Aubrey Keech Reserve saw Mounties come away with the huge scalp of Illawarra to the tune of 8-4.

With the scores destined to be locked at zero at the break, centre Breeze E’e broke the deadlock with the last play of the half to poke Mounties noses in front.

Her opposite centre Terisa Lemauga Nafatali helped double the advantage midway through the second half to put them in a strong position at 8-0.

The Steelers weren’t able to respond, and with E’e sent to the sin bin in the final minutes, they eventually found their way over the line with Jordyn Preston barging over with the last play of the game.

WESTS TIGERS 18-24 CRONULLA

A Nakia Davis-Welsh masterclass has helped the Sharks hold off a late Tigers charge to prevail 24-18 at Henson Park.

The former NSW and Australian representative scored two tries for Cronulla as they raced out to an early lead.

Joy Levy gave them the perfect start with a try inside 90 seconds, before Davis-Welsh had them at 10-0 up through as many minutes.

Gun Tigers fullback Tiana-Lee Thorne got her side back into the contest, but it was the Sharks again with a quick try after halftime through Brooke Elliott that swung the momentum back in their favour.

By the time Davis-Welsh had her second the margin was 14, and not even a double to Thorne could help bridge the margin.

SOUTH SYDNEY 22-10 CENTRAL COAST

South Sydney has turned its fortunes around in style with a convincing 22-10 defeat of the Central Coast at Redfern Oval.

Coming off a poor year, the Rabbitohs shot out of the blocks with Shanelle Lyons scoring out wide to give them a dream start.

The two went try-for-try as the home side held a slender 12-10 advantage early in the second half.

That’s before the class of Kiana Takairangi pushed the margin out beyond a converted try, with young Abbie Ritchie sealing the result just eight minutes later.

MANLY 10-18 PARRAMATTA

It was a battle of the debutant clubs at Brookvale Oval, with Parramatta enjoying the spoils of their inaugural HNWP success with an 18-10 victory.

Bulldogs recruit Chelsea Makira gave the Eels a dream start with a try inside two minutes, and when Yasmine Baker found her way over the stripe they were going at a point a minute at 12-0 up.

Tallara Bamblett kept the pressure on as the visitors raced away to an 18-0 margin inside 20 minutes.

Georgia Grey gave the home side their first points before the break, and when Alianna Tonuu scored with 14 minutes to play it was game on.

Parramatta managed to grind it out from there to hold solid and claim the spoils.

WENTWORTHVILLE 36-0 ST GEORGE

A comprehensive performance from Wentworthville saw them finish the round on top of the table after hammering St George 36-0 at Ringrose Park.

The Magpies were on from the opening whistle as they raced in seven unanswered tries to send out an emphatic warning to the rest of the competition.

Belinda Gwasamun scored the first of her two tries in the fourth minute to set the tone, before Carly Abbott, Hope Schuster and Danielle Seckold helped them open up an 18-0 lead at the break.

Gwasamun had her second 10 minutes from full-time and captain Caitlin Turnbull put the icing on the win with a nice effort in the closing stages.

CANTERBURY 34-12 NEWCASTLE

A hot start has lifted the Canterbury Bulldogs to a big 34-12 win over Newcastle at Belmore Oval.

The Bulldogs put on two huge bursts to start both halves that left the Knights struggling to keep up.

Sarahcen Oliver scored a double inside a four-minute period as they raced out to a 16-0 lead inside 11 minutes.

Rima Butler helped pull the Knights back to within 10 at the break, but Canterbury shot out of the blocks again to put the result out of reach early in the second half.

By the time Natalia Webb crossed the home side was up by 22 and had victory secure.
