CAMERON Scott grew up in Wagga Wagga where he fell in love with cycling and has since ridden to the top of the sport.
Scott, 16, of Menangle, is the Macarthur Chronicle’s Junior Sports Star nominee for this week.
Scott initially took up mountain biking but was introduced to the outdoor velodrome at Wagga and switched his focus to track cycling. He said he loved the camaraderie of the sport and the challenges it posed.
“I love cycling because it takes me to many places and I get to meet lots of new people,” he said.
“It is very challenging, both physically and mentally, and gives me a good sense of achievement.”
Scott has set numerous Australian track cycling records and was also awarded the Champion of Champions award at the 2012 junior national track championships.
Although he tried his hand at cricket and soccer he was never much into those sports, and once he found cycling there was no turning back.
Scott models himself on Slovakian road cyclist Peter “The Terminator” Sagan who has won four stages of the Tour de France.
“I like to think we are quite similar,” he said.
“He is good at one-day classics which is what I am interested in pursuing.”
Scott said his short-term goal was to be selected in the national squad to compete at the junior world track championships in August next year.
“Ultimately I hope to ride as a professional road cyclist on the world tour,” he said.
