CRANBROOK doesn’t offer fencing as a sport but that hasn’t stopped Dominic Au-Yeung from forming a team.
The Year 10 student has been nominated for the Junior Sports Star award, sponsored by Rebel for his role in a three man team that made it to the finals of the AJ Rae Shield in Brisbane.
Au-Yeung, 16, teamed up with James Hull and Kim Gallagher, both 17, coming a respectable fourth.
Hull also won silver in the Senior Individual School State Championships.
And while his two team mates will leave school this year, Au-Yeung said he hoped to get fencing on the Cranbrook map.
“This is our first time fencing for Cranbrook,” he said.
“I am going to try to make it a regular competition for us and hopefully they will make it a regular sport here (at Cranbrook).”
He also plays soccer and basketball for the school and enjoys skiing.
“My coach thinks I am a bit lazy,” Au-Yeung said.
“He says I have got potential but says I am a bit lazy sometimes, he is strict.”
But the member of the University of Technology Sydney fencing club, hopes to one day represent Australia in the foil.
“I have to train twice a week on Wednesday from 6-8.30pm and Saturday from 3-6pm, it is a lot of work that goes into it.”
Remarkably, although he has been fencing since age nine he only started competing this year.
“At the start I didn’t want to compete, I was a bit intimidated. I am picking it up.”
