The race for the top four has been blown wide open after a string of results shook up the table during round 10 of the Central Coast Rugby Union.

The big fixture over the weekend took place at Woy Woy Oval where Warnervale continued its recent run of strong form to down Woy Woy 31-23.

Just one week after knocking off competition heavyweight Ourimbah, the Wildcats kept the momentum going by running in five tries to four to secure a bonus-point win over the Lions.

The result, combined with Avoca Beach’s 35-18 loss to undefeated ladder leaders Terrigal, has created a situation where Woy Woy, Warnervale and Avoca Beach are locked in a three-way shootout for the last spot in the semi-finals.

While all sides have won four and lost five of their nine games this year, the Lions find themselves in the box seat due to their eight bonus points, which may prove crucial come the end of the season.

They are followed by the Wildcats and Sharks, who have five and three bonus points respectively.

A game that could have huge repercussions on the ladder will take place this Saturday when Avoca host Woy Woy at Heazlett Park.

At the top of the ladder, Terrigal extended its unbeaten run at the start of the season to nine games after a 17-point win over the Sharks, while both Ourimbah and Lake Macquarie ensured that they remained close behind with big wins.

Lathan Hutchison-Walters scored 23 points as the Razorbacks ran in 11 tries to three in its 73-21 rout of Northlakes/The Bay, while the Roos kept their hopes of a top-two finish alive with a 98-14 thrashing of Gosford-Kariong.

Mikaele Lenigusu and Vitori Erenatau both scored hat-tricks as Lake Macquarie piled on a whopping 16 tries in the rout.

Standings: Terrigal 43, Razorbacks 37, Lake Macquarie 35, Woy Woy 24, Warnervale 21, Avoca Beach 19, Northlakes/The Bay 8, Gosford-Kariong 0

WOMEN’S PREMIERSHIP

Avoca Beach remains undefeated in the women’s 12-a-side premiership after the Sharks defeated Terrigal 27-17 in a top of the table clash at Heazlett Park.

Natasha Ireland scored a hat-trick as the home side outscored their rivals five tries to three.

The win has given Avoca a crucial lead in the race for the minor premiership, with the side now nine points clear of the Trojans in second.

Elsewhere, defending premiers Lake Macquarie have kept the heat on Terrigal with a 76-0 thumping of Gosford-Kariong at Walters Park.

Kathryn Niki and Claudia Richardson both scored hat-tricks in the 12-try rout as the Roos moved to just one point Terrigal in third place.

However with a game in hand on their rivals, Lake Macquarie appears to be the most likely to challenge Avoca for the minor premiership, with the teams to face off in what could be a decisive game in the penultimate round of the regular season.

In other round 10 fixtures, Northlakes/The Bay defeated Ourimbah 24-17 and Warnervale shut out Woy Woy 27-0.

Standings: Avoca Beach 45, Terrigal 36, Lake Macquarie 35, Warnervale 26, Ourimbah 15, Northlakes/The Bay 10, Woy Woy 5, Gosford-Kariong 5

LOWER GRADES

The battle for the top four is particularly dramatic in second grade, with four sides heading into the final five games of the season with identical records.

Lake Macquarie, Avoca Beach, Ourimbah and Warnervale have all won six games and lost three so far this season, with just six points separating the second-placed Roos from the Wildcats in fifth.

In a huge game for the make-up of the top four, the Razorbacks host Lake Macquarie at Ourimbah Rugby Park this weekend.

In what is a sense of deja vu, the group of four are all chasing undefeated Terrigal at the top of the table, with the Trojans keeping their perfect start to the season alive with a 29-12 win over Avoca Beach.

Standings: Terrigal 43, Lake Macquarie 33, Avoca Beach 31, Ourimbah 31, Warnervale 27, Woy Woy 9, Northlakes/The Bay 4, Gosford-Kariong 3

Mid-table logjams seem to be par for the course with a similar situation emerging in third grade.

Gosford-Kariong’s 34-7 win over Lake Macquarie and Ourimbah’s crucial 12-7 victory over Northlakes/The Bay has breathed life into the race for the top four, with six teams remaining genuine chances to play finals football.

While Avoca Beach (39 points) and Warnervale (35) are leading the way out in front, things are getting very tight just below that, with Northlakes/The Bay (27), Terrigal (22), Gosford-Kariong (22) and Ourimbah (21) all fighting it out for a spot in the finals.
