MARY Wootton’s love for the Blacktown Workers Darts Club is right on target.
For nearly 30 years, Mary has been a fixture of darts nights and competitions.
It has become a second home to the 52 year-old Lalor Park resident, who has been nominated for a Junior Sports Star Service to Sport Award.
“I have loved darts ever since I was a little girl and have been playing competitively since I was 16,” she said.
“I used to compete in pub competitions in the city and had to be snuck in to play because I was underage.
“I needed a new club when I moved to the Blacktown area in 1985 and went along to a darts night at the workers club.
“Little did I think when I joined the club that it would become such a big part of my life.”
Though a shoulder injury has forced her to step back from top level play in recent years, Wootton’s darts career features numerous top-grade competition titles.
Some highlights of her career include three ladies doubles wins in 2002, 2006 and 2007, two mixed doubles championship wins in 1997 and 2007, two handicap singles wins in 1995 and 2001 as well as a Sam Welby mixed doubles title in 1998.
However, it is the 1999 West Districts A Grade singles title that holds pride of place for the Blacktown Workers Darts Club life member.
These days Wootton has her hands full as club captain, assisting club activities including the children’s Christmas party.
Her husband John Faulkner is also devoted to the darts club as president, and her son Kieran is an avid player.
