For more than 24 hours after cricket rising star Ollie Davies broke his thumb playing NSW Premier Cricket on the weekend he feared the worse.
Now the Sydney Thunder youngster has received welcome news from a hand specialist and is hopeful of only being absent for a few early season Big Bash games.
‘Initially I was told it would be eight weeks of recovery but now I’ve been told three weeks which is really, really, good news,’’ said Davies, who was fielding for Manly in their win against Western Suburbs in first grade on Saturday when he injured his hand.
“Fingers crossed I only miss three Big Bash games.’’
Davies took the BBL by storm last season and is tipped to be one of the stars when BBL/11 kicks off, with a top-order position potentially on the cards.
Davies was playing alongside brother Joel, also a talented cricketer, for the first time in Sydney first grade when the mishap occurred.
His brother was Manly’s top scorer with 70 after a golden duck on debut a week earlier.
“I was just fielding in the slips and the ball bounced and hit me on the top of the finger,'’ said the 21-year-old from Curl Curl, who burst onto the BBL scene with head-turning performances, including scores of 36 from 22 balls and 48 from 23 balls.
“I had an idea it was broken.
“I broke my wrist two years ago and it had a similar feeling with a big throb.’’
An initial X-Ray identified a broken thumb.
“It’s my right hand and I am right handed but it would have been worse,’’ he said.
“I get the splint off in two weeks and then we will know if it’s a yes or a no that I can catch.’’
Davies goal for the summer is to further make a mark on the BBL and also for NSW in the Sheffield Shield.
