ASSISTS, not individual grandstanders, win games.
This is the mantra that drives the undefeated Sydney Comets under-12 basketball team.
The Alexandria-based team of 10 boys competed at a national tournament last weekend. They have also won their first seven games in the NSW Basketball Metro League and two state tournaments.
Coach Greg Shapiro said his boys used tactics taken from the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs and Golden State Warriors.
“They realise that I will always give the person credit that passes the ball before I give credit to the person who made the shot,” he said.
The group watch Spurs and Warriors play when preparing for games.
Eion Morrisey, 11, said he liked playing for the Comets because the team always gave each other a fair go.
“If someone else has a better opportunity, you would give it up, you wouldn’t take it yourself,” Eion said.
“If someone was down, then we would help them up and we wouldn’t continue on with the game until they were better.”
