AFLW: Sydney Swans and GWS Giant hopefuls to watch in Summer Series

One is the sister of an exciting young star of the AFL. Another is a bright talent in the women’s game. Swans and Giants hopefuls and Players to Watch in the women’s AFL Summer Series.

Exciting times are ahead for young, female players across NSW and the ACT.

The Sydney Swans will join the GWS Giants in the AFLW from the coming season – creating new opportunity for players dreaming of a career in Aussie Rules.

From this weekend, some of the best and brightest talent in the game will be on show in the women’s Summer Series. Full details and team lists are HERE.

With help from the experts at AFL NSW/ACT, we take a look at some of the Players to Watch in the series which starts this weekend.

TAYLAH CANOBIE, SWANS RED TEAM

This 19-year-old hails from the NSW central coast and plays for the Killarney Vale Bombers.

A teenage midfielder, Canobie is already recognised as one of the rising stars of the game in AFL Hunter Central Coast.

Canobie brings plenty of experience to the tournament having played senior footy for the AFL Hunter Central Coast side in the battle with AFL South Coast last year.

She is known for her ferocious attack on the ball and decision-making under pressure.

DOM CARRUTHERS, GIANTS ORANGE TEAM

Dom Carruthers hails from Sydney’s north shore and plays for the club in the AFL Sydney competition.

A midfield threat she is described as hardworking and tenacious and ruthlessly attacks the ball.

A tough competitor, she accrues plenty of possessions each week and is well known for her big engine.

April Devine is a talented teenager on the rise.

APRIL DEVINE, SWANS RED

Another teenager, Devine hails from Kempsey but is so dedicated to the cause she journeys 100km plus weekly to play for the Coffs Harbour Breakers.

Just 19 and able to play up forward, she is already towering above many of her teammates ands rivals.

She also boasts an enviable vertical leap and is a dominant force in the ruck.

GILLIAN BEHAN, GIANTS ORANGE

Gillian Behan is a natural leader and the captain of the Inner West Magpies in the AFL Sydney comp.

An athletics, agile and quick utility who doesn't shy away from hard work and is dangerous in front of goal.

Behan has a huge engine and can impact the contest or run and create.

SENNA GULDEN, SWANS WHITE TEAM

The younger sister of Swans rising star Errol Gulden and like her brother, this UNSW-ES Bulldogs player has talent to burn.

Started out at the famous Maroubra Saints club, she will be coached in the Summer Series by mum Bronwyn.

Known as a strong and hardworking inside midfielder who breaks lines and delivers with elite accuracy on either foot. A leader on and off the field.

CYNTHIA HAMILTON, GIANTS CHARCOAL

A Queanbeyan Tigers player on the rise, she was full forward in the U19 AFLW All Australian Team last year at just 17.

Started playing in Canberra when asked to make up the numbers in her brother’s Belconnen team as a 10-year-old.

The experts have likened her to Ellie Blackburn for her kicking penetration, games sense and gut running for the contest.

HAYLEY HAWKINS, SWANS RED

From the central coast club of Cardiff which has plenty of players competing in the Summer Series.

Hawkins is a versatile tall who can play all over the ground.

The 183cm player is dominant in the air and adept in the ruck.

She has been a standout at state representative level and can play forward or in the ruck.

BRYANA PARKER, GIANTS ORANGE

Bryana Parker hails from the East Coast Eagles club and is an outside player who loves to carry the footy and break lines.

Parker comes form a soccer background and known for her agility.

This, combined with her speed, could see her turn plenty of heads at the event..
