Two new Metro lines will lead to a major residential building boom to transform suburbs stretching through the city’s south east as part of a 36-year vision for the future of Sydney’s transport network.

The NSW Government released the vision as part of the South East Sydney Transport Strategy, outlining a Metro line stretching from the Sydney CBD to Randwick and onwards to La Perouse would be operational by 2041.

A secondary line from Randwick to Sydney Airport and Kogarah would welcome commuters in 2056.

A series of rapid bus routes through Sydenham, Mascot, Eastlakes, Kingsford and up to Bondi were also unveiled as part of Transport for NSW’s vision for the future.

A Transport for NSW planner said proposed mass transit links to the south east from Malabar to La Perouse would be extended as part of the plan, while the government would also be “prioritising the delivery of Metro to the South East”, instead of earlier plans to extend the light rail to Maroubra Junction.

“Metro (would) provide the higher capacity to meet the higher demand now expected in the medium and longer term,” the planner said in the report.

Blueprints also unveiled a series of Metro station housing precinct have been earmarked as part of the government’s plan, with major growth planned for suburbs including Rockdale, Wolli Creek, Mascot, Maroubra, Kingsford and La Perouse.

The government report said precincts would be designed to echo the same scale of development in precincts including Waterloo St, Surry Hills, East Village and a Portman St, Zetland.

“There is potential for uplift in development capacity due to transport investment within South East Sydney,” the planner said. “Uplift would be expected in areas within 800 metres of a Metro station or along rapid bus lines/ light rail corridors.

“Uplift around Metro stations would be expected to be greater due to its city shaping potential.”

While employment zones would also be expanded in Randwick, Eastgardens, Rockdale, Mascot and Sydney Airport.

Transport Minister Andrew Constance said the department was developing an integrated map, alongside NSW Planning, to determine where growth would be required across the transport network.

“We have seen time and time again the Department of Planning and Local Government approve apartment complex after apartment complex in the city,” he said. “So it is almost imposibble to retrofit the transport network.

“What we are saying in that part of town is … we want to fill in the 2056 transport blueprint and look more specifically at how we can facilitate for growth.

Mr Constance said it was “fairly obvious a Metro train is going to be required” in south east Sydney.
