Federal government needs to cough up for NSW Metro: Minister

Three construction consortiums have been short-listed to tunnel deep under the city to build the massive Sydney Metro west project spanning from the CBD to Westmead.

Transport Minister Andrew Constance said 10,000 construction jobs would be created as part of the tunnelling program for the Metro west network stretching out into Sydney’s west.

He revealed a joint venture made up of construction companies John Holland, CPB Contractors and Ghella Australia would be vying for the contract against a Gamuda and Laing O’Rouke Australia joint venture, as well as Acciona Australia and Ferrovial Australia joint venture.

The successful group would be tasked with construction of the twin 11km tunnels from The Bays Precinct to Sydney Olympic Park.

While the unsuccessful joint ventures will then vie for the twin 9km western tunnelling package from Sydney Olympic Park to Westmead.

“These contracts will require tunnellers, electricians, plumbers, carpenters, concrete workers, truck drivers, labourers and security guards,” Mr Constance said.

“The three short-listed consortia have a wealth of Australian and international experience in delivering high quality infrastructure projects. We expect to be in a position to award the first contract by the middle of next year.”

Last week, NewsLocal revealed one of the construction companies, CPB Contractors was convicted by the Land and Environment Court last year following an investigation by the NSW Environmental Protection Authority after untreated leachate or contaminated water was at the St Peters WestConnex interchange site.

Earlier this month, NewsLocal uncovered a major delay in the Sydney Metro West completion time frame.

Tunnel boring machines are expected to be in the ground by 2022.
