Sydney Metro West: NSW Government delay completion date until 2030

The NSW Government has pushed back the completion date of the multibillion-dollar Sydney Metro West project. FIND OUT WHEN THE DRIVERLESS NETWORK WILL BE COMPLETE.

It was touted as the transport game-changer expected to slash travel times for Western Sydney commuters, but the NSW Government now says the Sydney Metro West won’t be completed for another 10 years.

Sydney Metro “life cycle summaries” published over the past 12 months pointed to the multibillion-dollar project being operational by the second half of the 2020s.

But recent revisions to Transport for NSW’s Sydney Metro plans removed the delivery and operational dates entirely.

A Sydney Metro spokesman told NewsLocal all of the government’s Metro rail projects were “on track to be delivered as quickly as possible”.

“On the Sydney Metro West project, construction will start later this year and the first tunnel boring machine is expected in the ground before the end of 2022 with construction continuing into the second half of the 2020s,” the spokesman said.

“Consistent with the NSW Government’s public commitments, the project is on track to be completed by 2030.”

But Shadow Western Sydney spokesman Greg Warren hit out at the government’s decision to “change the time frames and hope no one in the city’s west noticed”.

“The government themselves know they can’t be trusted to run a chook raffle, let alone complete this major project on time,” Mr Warren said. “That is why they have delayed the completion to 2030 — and who knows if it will actually be operational by then.”

Mr Warren said the removal of the time frames for completion from the Sydney Metro website was “sneaky and devious”.

When it comes to the Sydney Metro Western Sydney Airport project, the government also removed expected completion dates from planning documents. However, a department spokesman assured commuters it would be operational by the time the airport was in service.

In April the government revealed a total of 154 homes and businesses would be facing the wrecking ball to make the major infrastructure project stretching from the Sydney CBD to Westmead a reality.
