When Maroubra resident and keen photographer Lewis Loughlin bought his first drone two months ago, even he would have been surprised at the footage he would soon catch.
Mr Loughlin was out surfing on Monday morning at Maroubra Beach when he spotted a huge pod of dolphins out the back of waves.
“I go out there most mornings for a surf,” he said.
“I bumped into a couple of mates in the water and I was only in there for about 10 minutes when we saw the pod out the back, and I thought I have to go and get my drone and get some footage.”
Fortunately, he lives close by and quickly had his drone in the air about 7am.
“I got about 35 minutes of footage,” he said.
“There must have been about 70 of them which is a massive pod of dolphins.
“I have seen a few pods here but not that number of dolphins and not for that amount of time.”
He said he suspected they were just playing as he could not see any fish they were chasing.
“It was quite strange,” he said. “I went off to work and I think they must have hung around for an hour and a half or so.”
Mr Loughlin has lived in the area for about five years and said he was rapt to catch the scene on camera.
Mr Loughlin — who does plenty of surfing photography at Maroubra — added he bought it to take video of the ocean and marine life.
He said there was plenty of people down at the beach yesterday watching the dolphins.
