MAROUBRA United Boardriders will jet off to the Gold Coast this Friday, aiming to fly into the history books as they defend their title as the best junior surfboarding team in Australia.
The presidents of Maroubra Surfriders, North Maroubra Surfriders and South End Boardriders first brought the talented group of kids together last year, when they clinched the Vissla Junior Kirra teams Championships title in their inaugural tilt at the event.
Maroubra United spokesman Matt Lawson said Kirra is the world’s largest interclub surfing team event, giving the local kids the opportunity to take on the cream of 36 clubs from across the nation.
“Last year’s champions were the first Sydney team to ever win the this prestigious event and have been training extremely hard to keep the trophy here at Maroubra for another year,” Mr Lawson said.
“The surf team is made up of surfers aged 10 years through to 17 who have been chosen to represent our community.
“The best junior surfers from around the country will be competing at the event but we will once again be putting forward a very strong team and there is no reason why we can’t take out the title once again.”
Surfers Jake Feher, Mateus Bersot, Koby Lawson, Koda and Zane Killorn, Billy and Jake Olsen, Tye Koolis, Jason O’Rourke, Fletcher Brown, Max McGuigan and Zac Michael will compete individually over two days at the best beach or point break between Kirra and Duranbah, QLD.
Mr Lawson along with Jay Brown and Luke Beardsnore will guide and mentor the team, and said there had been a lot of work behind the scenes to make it happen.
“We simply couldn’t do it without the support of donators and major sponsors The Bay Hotel and Diner and Park & Fly,” Mr Lawson said.
It comes as Koda Killorn set the pace for the summer on Sunday, winning the Under-14 boys division at the first stop on the Woolworths Surfers Groms Comp tour at Collaroy.
Killorn opted for the rarer left handers during the semis and final to gain the upper hand, posting an impressive 14.44. The win earned him an invitation to attend an all-expenses paid, three-day Woolworths Surf Camp at the Hurley Surfing Australia High-Performance Centre.
United team mate Jake Feher placed third in Under-12 boys, while Malabar’s Lucy Darragh won the Under 8s mixed event, and Tiarna Darragh came fourth in the Under-12 girls division.
The competitors will take to the water in round two at Cronulla Beach on October 14 to 15.
