RANDWICK was the better side for much of Saturday’s clash against Manly despite losing 23-10.
It was Nura Gili Day at Coogee Oval and first grade players wore indigenous-themed jerseys designed by Dennis Golding — the same artist who designed the 2017 Wallabies indigenous jersey.
Randwick started well and at half time were certainly the better team despite trailing 13-10. The Wicks continued to have the upper hand after the break. Late in the second half, Manly capitalised on Randwick’s fatigue, scoring a converted try followed by a penalty kick a few minutes later.
The Nura Gili Medal for Best on Ground was awarded to Manly captain and lock, Adrian Hall.
Second grade started well but a 20-minute lapse in concentration saw them trail 27-7. The Wicks played considerably better in the second half, scoring three unanswered tries, but Manly held on to win 27- 24.
Third grade were in it until the last five minutes when Manly scored an opportune field goal, followed by a converted try. Final score was 19-14 to Manly.
There was better news for fourths who earned their second successive victory, winning 12-0. Man of the match was halfback Andy Ball.
