Changes for South Coogee cycleway to save trees

Randwick Council staff believe their design changes to a proposed cycleway between South Coogee and Kingsford — including saving 27 trees — should satisfy more residents.
Council staff have published their revised concept plan for the 1.9km cycleway, which has attracted plenty of criticism from residents over tree loss, loss of parking and safety concerns.
The staff have proposed new areas of shared path to save 27 trees along the Bundock St, Avoca St and Sturt St route. The plan would see 16 trees removed and 60 planted.
The previous design proposed to remove 37 trees.
Mayor Kathy Nielson supported the changes.
“When we consulted with the community in late 2018, they told us very strongly that retaining trees is the most important issue,” she said.
“We’ve listened to the community and made changes.”
Councillors will consider the revised concept plan at a meeting next Tuesday night.
Residents of Bundock St, whose driveways will meet the cycleway, have warned that cyclists and cars will be on a collision course.
Some councillors have sided with concerned residents and voted against the cycleway.
Cr Tony Bowen has been one of those critics.
He believed the design changes made little difference to a flawed plan.
“Our community has had enough of losing trees,” he said. “We don’t need to lose anymore. Our community won’t tolerate it.”
Cr Bowen said the cycleway was inherently flawed and designed only to support the light rail in the city.
He cast doubt on how many cyclists would use the cycleway to travel to the city via the light rail.
The cycleway would connect to existing ones at Coogee and Maroubra, and the Kingsford light rail terminus. Pedestrian paths would also be provided.
